I know this has probably been asked and answered numerous times, attempted a search here on the forums and it kept
erroring out.

In the process of gathering the parts for a SBR build, and my forms are all at the ATF awaiting approval.
Do I need to wait until I have my tax stamp back from the ATF before I can purchase the barrel?
Most websites that sell the shorter barrels state NFA requirements, does this mean they won't sell
the barrel without proof of the tax stamp?

Thanks!

Some companys want you to have a Tax Stamp and some don't. Just tell the company that won't sell you a barrel it's for an AR pistol.
You can buy the barrel and have it, but I would have a Pistol buffer tube on the rifle waiting for its stamp, just in case someone did come calling.
Also make sure you have a legal length complete upper for all other AR's you own.

To stay legal you need your Form 1 in hand before building your SBR upper.  But there are ways around that which are totally legal.
You can take the lower you are SBRing and build it as a pistol (no stock or VG) while waiting for the Form 1 to come back.
You can buy a separate lower and build it as a pistol and use your SBR upper (no VG) on it until the Form 1 comes back.
Buy your barrel an store it off site and hope nothing happens to it while you are waiting the 90+ days for the Form 1 to come back.
Or, wait until your Form 1 comes back to get your barrel.

Remember, you need to have your lower being SBRed engraved with your name, city, and state so you might as well do that now while waiting for the Form 1.

Some dealers will not sell a barrel shorter than 16" without proof of a tax stamp although there is no legal requirement to do so. I've ordered short barrels before and had no contact with anyone except the website. What NFA rules apply means that You are the responsible party if you use it illegally. I have an AR pistol, several non-SBR lowers, and a registered SBR lower for the short uppers when I want to use a VFG and a stock. Why keep my pistol??  So I can move the parts to another stripped lower to ensure functionality with that upper if it is a dedicated lower.

Thanks guys.
My lower is already engraved, figured since the info needed to be on the Form 1
I went ahead and did it first and only have the one lower and partial upper so far.
I'll finish this build before I start on another.
