Using the search feature turns up lots of threads with SBR legal issues and "check out my SBR" but not much in terms of SBR reliability discussion.

I am just starting to think about an SBR build and don't see a need to re-invent the wheel. What's a proven combo?

Your question is too broad.  Obviously, a barrel of 15.9" would probably be the most reliable in terms of direct impingement.  The standardized 14.5" would be the most common and the most commonly reliable.

After that it's varying shades depending on port size, spring tension, and buffer weight and whether or not you want to enter the world of piston driven.

Proven combo, Colt M4 and it's derivatives.

Just go with a quality assembled upper. My LMT 10.5 upper had to go back to lmt but it ran before and after. A noveske, lmt, dd, etc 10.3/10.5 would be good. Bravo companies 11.5 and 12.5 uppers would be a good choice as well. I'd be also looking at larue, spikes, rainier, and some others.

2k rounds on mine 0 failures, always fired with the suppressor. YMMV.

My 7.5" SBR with Adams Arms piston kit runs 100%.

I really want to put it together myself. Not because I think I can do better, but I enjoy the process.

Kind of makes sense since you're in the Build It Yourself forum.

I built my 10.5" SBR from the ground up.  Just use quality components and you should be good to go.  You may have to adjust buffer weight, BCG, gas port size, buffer spring rates, and extractor tension, but you can get the shorties to run 100%  I managed to get lucky and mine ran with my parts selection from the get go.  I've run probably 3-4k through mine with no issues.  This includes everything from Wolf to my issue TAP ammo.  YMMV

If you are going the SBR CAN IT as well and have ADCO supply you the 10.5" M4S Ops Inc Can Barrel combo. Barrel and Can (Sound Suppressor) for around $500.00.
Just what I would do! M4QUADRAIL

Well, I wouldn't go any shorter than 10.3" for DI. Shorte lengths really shine with a piston. I bought my DD 10.3" barrel from PK Firearms and it's been 100% reliable with a standard Colt H buffer.

My $0.02.

I purchased a complete 10.3" DD upper from PK Firearms (great place BTW).  Placed the upper on my Bushy lower.  Took it out to the range and I couldnt get 2 rounds out without it double feeding/FTE.  Read some troubleshooting tips here at ARFCOM.  Proceeded to my Lowes and bout a few packages of #60 O-Rings and placed one on my extractor.  Put 300 rounds without incident.  Realizing that the O-Ring solution was only temporary, I ordered extractor upgrades from BCM and a Spikes ST-T2 buffer.  600 rounds later, still no problems.  580 of those rounds were WalMArt sold Federal bulk rounds in 55gr .223 and the other 20 were 75gr .223 Hornady TAP FPD.

So far so good on my SBR.

FWIW I've never had one reliability issue with any 10.3, .5 or 11.5 that I run whether that be factory or home built with any buffer, ammo, extractor, suppressed/unsuppressed, etc. set up. I think too many folks get held up by this mostly ghost reliability issue when it comes to SBRs. Find the set up you want & build it. Don't let these reliability concerns hold you back.
