So i got it on there. Does the flat part used for the wrench go on top and bottom or does it really matter. Mines a little cock eyed right know so i thought maybe i torqued it too much.

Merry Christmas everyone!!

The position of the flats don't matter, beyond personal preference.

Ideally, you should tighten it until it's positioned as you like it.

If you cannot tighten it further to the position you want, get another crush washer and try again.

You are not supposed to use any type of washer with a SE vortex. Tighten to 30 lbs and wherever it is, is correct. There is no timing to be done.

I stand corrected.  I thought it was just like a standard FS.

iirc I tightened mine to 5; the thing supposedly self tightens further as you shoot it.
No problems with mine.

+1 on mine.  I used a small crescent wrench and probably tightened it to <10 ft/lbs.  No washer needed per the instructions.

My paperwork said 10 lbs because it becomes tighter as the rifle is fired.

How do you measure pounds when tightening?

torque wrench

force * distance from the fulcrum.
ex: 6" wrench and 10 lbs of force(like with a scale)= 5ft*lbs
keep the units the same
.5 ft * 10 lbs= 5ft*lbs
or buy a gosh dang torque wrench.

i hand tightened mine then torqued it a little further. the paper says not over 10 lbs so i was afraid to go any tighter than that. the flats are a little off to the side on mine. im just going to leave it as it sits. thanks a lot guys for the responses and Merry Christmas.

It all depends on which version of the Smith Enterpirse Vortex that you are using.

I wonder has anyone done any accuracy testing with the vortex on vs off to see if the claims by SE that the "vortex helps improve overall accuracy" are true?

Stated here:

From what I read here, the accuracy thing is true but isn't consistent and conclusive, the testers can't replicate the results with every barrel and rifle tested.  On some rifles the accuracy improved with it installed, but  other rifles seemed indifferent.  I did not read that it'd degrade accuracy any, so at worst you won't shoot tighter groups but you'll still have one of the best flash suppressors available.

Well if it works with a single barrel then they wouldnt be lying on their advertisement then

It would just be nice if someone were to test it out.

It didn't seem to make a damn bit of difference with mine....accuracy wise.

OK that is somewhat incorrect, 10lbs is what it should be intsalled to, i usually go more like 12-17lbs. when removing one after it has been fired it may take upto 40lbs, so i guess i spoke incorredctly. They will usually tighten themselves to around 30 lbs.

Some Votex come with shims, some dont.  Had no accuracy change with it vs Blackout or bare muzzle.
