I just ordered 25 USGI LaBelle Teflon Coated Mags I plan on loading them up and having them just sitting there for Emergecy use only.  I wondering what ammo to fill them with?

I looked at the "Better Performing Self Defense Loads" page and saw that most of the 5.56 ammo is either 65+ grain which I don't think would be good for any Medium Range work when shooting thru my M4 I plan to buy(Right now I just have a Bushy XM-15 E2S 20") or very expense to use for 25 mags.

I was thinking maybe Winchester USA 62 grain FMJ which I found 1,000 rounds for $225.

I am really just hoping to find something heavier than 55 grain but not to heavy and at a decent price.  The price doesn't bother me as much as performance because if your life is on the line, I rather go with the qualuty Ammo.  I don't mine $250 - 275 per thousand rounds... I am really just trying to find something of the right grain amount.

Whooo, I typed to much.  I would appreciate any comments.

M193 / Q3131A is my ammo choice for such situations.

I've been told that Black Hills 68gr OTM is one of the best out there, still need to test it in my weapon though

M193/Q3131A for me.

I have a 1x9 20" A2, target shoot a lot of Win 62 fmj at 200 yds,
and am happy with its performance in that regard.

But I have never researched its fragmentation characteristics.

Have you read the Ammo Oracle?

Why do you think it wouldn't be good in your M4?

And what cost are you willing to pay?  Remember, this ammo is going to be used to defend yourself and others.

I thought if the bullet was to heavy it would drop to quick to be of much use in medium to long range shots.

That's ironic, given that these bullets were specifically developed to allow for accurate LONG range shooting.  It is only a happy little accident that they have great terminal ballistics.  Yes, the bullets are heavier and start slower, but they are also longer and have better BCs (ballistic coefficient, or coefficient of drag), so they retain velocity better.  Light bullets start out fast but slow down quickly.  There are graphs in the Oracle that show this.

For example:

This shows 55gr M193 vs 62gr M855.  Despite starting 150 fps slower, look where M855 ends up.

Also, what is "medium to long" for you?  How often do you shoot at these ranges?

Troy,

Thanks for explaining that, I didn't realize that.
