I'm curious if anyone is using practice rounds for go to ammo. I know, kind of stupid question but with the prices of ammo these days I was wondering if anyone is doing it. I also understand how much is your life worth. I'm not saying cheap paper punching UMC stuff, but something midrange ammo. What are some of you guys using?

Yes, I keep AE for both plinking and SHTF. I prefer to use what I shoot and newer ammo to surplus. I do have some Black Hills BB and Radway Green stashed away also. For 7.62X39 I prefer Monarch or Silver Bear( or my SKS and WASR do). Ken

It's good to use some of your SHTF ammo for practice every now and then to be sure your gun likes to ingest it without difficulty. I prefer recent surplus ammo like LC M193 or Guat M193 as my SHTF ammo too, which gives a higher degree of confidance that it will feed reliably and go boom.

Prvi Partizan M193.  Good plinking and good SHTF ammo, IMO.

My personal SHTF ammo is BH 75gr OTM with WCC M855 as a primary backup. All the LC M193, LC M855, Q3131A, Radway, Guat , and Privi is just back up. I like a variety of flavors.

I keep stocking up my supply of 5.56 75 grain TAP.  I only use it to function check and then for long range use.  In close or full auto I just use whatever is cheapest, usually Wolf 55 grain or some other cheap steel cased 55 grain.

this sums it up, well said.

MY SHTF ammo is New 5.56 Guat brass, CCI450 primers, 24.5 TAC, Nosler 77g w/cann pill. each one hand charged and exactly same OAL. Better/as good as BH red 5.56

Lake City and Winchester MIL both bullet weight, 55/62.

Kind of been at the SHTF stuff a while and don't have to use foreign stuff.

Same here. I've found that out to 100 yds or thereabouts, there really isn't enough difference in POI from one load to the next to worry about it like I did at one point. So I'll use whatever is on hand that isn't dangerous (such as crap reloads from sources known to be problematic). I admit, I am liking the Barnaul 55 and especially 62 gr stuff for practice these days. It's cheap, relatively speaking, and I seem to prefer it to Wolf.

FWIW I don't think any of us buying foreign .223 ammo (for a LONG time, definitely not right now or any time soon) is going to put an American out of work.

I have 2k of '92 radway stashed right now but I'm really happy with the prvi m193, a very acceptable medium between price and performance.  Cheap enough for plinking and and good enough to hunt shtf varmints.  I have bought a lot of the prvi in the last couple months.  Though I've not had a single failure from around 1,300 rounds of the radway I'm not sure I want to take 15 year old ammo and depend on it for another 15 years....I'm thinking to stash the a few cases of my PRVI and start shooting off the radway..ymmv....but I do think it's important that you shoot more than a once in awhile function check of your shtf brand of choice; train as you fight.

SHTF = 75gr OTM

SHTF= Factory Fresh. and stored / kept well !

SURPLUS M855/M193 = RANGE USE

WHY USE UNKNOWN SURPLUS  FOR SHTF ??

( only time I would if I was out of my BH75/77 )

SHTF for me?  Yeah, I'd like to say Black hills, M855/M193 from lake city, etc...

But really, If I'm there - if it goes bang and functions in the firearm, I'm happy.  I have a first line of Hornady TAP (seriously though - only 2 magazines, I don't have the money to buy more); a second line of Black Hills 75 grain - again, only my tac-vest load.  Then it is Prvi, Wolf, Barnul and even Federal 50grn. varmint hollow points.  That is all that I can afford that goes bang.  I have a lot of ammo, just not all that blue blood stuff.

My SHTF stash is a dozen or so climate controlled 840rd cans of IMI M855/M193/5.56m TAP T2/BH 75 HPBT......my clone reloads and anything I find cheap is for training

My SHTF Ammo is the only .223 that I currently own. 700 rds of 55gr UMC and i'm better off than anyone I personally know. I also have 400 7.62 Wolf for my AK.

I have mucho M855, M193 and M262.  But in my Arms Tech USR which is a very high end gas trap AR I have three 20 round mags of Corbon DPX 62 grain ready to go.
For my M-4 I have 6 mags of PMC 5.56 grain ready to go.  I don't feel unarmed with either.

Don't worry; hits are the only thing that truly counts. Yes, there is some really good SD ammo out there, certainly better than Remington UMC, but I really doubt that with a center-mass hit any BG would say, "Oh, he's only using Remington UMC!"

I plink with Guat, S&B, and AE. My go to stuff is IMI M855 and LC XM855. Since my RRA Entry Tac doesn't group as well with 55gr I don't feel bad burning it up.
