I just bought a SIG 516 that's never been fired and I'm wondering about this rifle. I already own a Ruger and have been very satisfied with it. I know that SIG is a respected name but I haven't heard much about the AR. I have less than $900 invested in a new in box rifle but before I start adding accessories I thought I'd better ask here. What's the opinion of you guys/girls? Thanks |

halo. I would throw the red dot as far as you can throw it, then shoot it w/ some iron sights where it landed if the background is all clear. Dont discracefully sell it to anyone. I would do just what you are thinking w/ the trigger also cause its a cobb. I would cuss slightly at the butt ugly barrel profile and finish that scratches by just looking at it. Then I would accessorize as necassary.
I think despite some things i've read put a little oil in the area of the piston/rod, the part that takes the primary shot of gases around those gas rings (what the hell shoudl I call that) unless your going to mag dump 60 rnds. I just thought it helped wipe away fouling easier although most gets blasted away. You should see what you think though after you shoot and clean. Thats the area you'll be taking care of most often. Also you'll find that some lube on the threads of the gas rod, in the adjustment area helps that to be more willing to come off/unscrew. At this point I think what im most impressed w/ is the cleanliness. my lower (and upper, really) looks like it was purchased yesterday, and I honestly don't know how many rounds i've shot. ...maybe around 1000 until shtf w/ ammo prices etc. honestly thers just a little metal to metal contact dusting on the side walls and thats it period. Thats been my experience and I love this rifle after you take care of the first paragraph. I'de recommend them to anyone. GREAT buy a @ 900 seriously, you should feel lucky. let us know what you think. |

I put 200 rds through it today, no malfunctions and shot to poa. I'm not used to the 3x SIG optic- my Ruger has an EOTech but other than that- it's another AR. I ordered a Geislee SSA this morning- should have it in a few days. I took the piston apart to clean but there wasn't much to do there. My Ruger builds a bit of smutch in the piston area but this one seems cleaner- purely subjective I know. Only time will tell but so far, so good. |

I've noticed that the optics that are sold with the gun are varied- on youtube, the small mico-style was shown but the one that I have is a 3x with a range comp reticle and can be illuminated to red or green. It says SIG Sauer and the model number is- CP1/G1.
a guy beside me at the range said that he hadn't read any good reviews but I noticed that he spent more time working on his, not a SIG, than he spent shooting. |
| Heck, don't apologize- I want input!! I appreciate the reply. Mounted an EOTech today, we have a guy at our range who buys a piece of great gear or gun and trades it back the next few days. I watch what he buys and make plans to buy what he brings back. He has more money than anybody I know but when he traded this Eo back in- I never work the trades, just watch the inventory, I was watching. I've tried to advise him to hold on to some of this stuff but it's like he's looking for something magical. I've told him time after time- shoot what you've bought, it'll probably be much better than you think- he never listens. |

Great shooting! I put a Geissele SSA trigger in tonight- really a big change. Mounted a Surefire light but I may change that- I have one of the 500 lumen Fury lights that I don't use much.
What ammo did you use for that group? I just bought a batch of 69gr BTHP match and since the rifling is 1:7, I'm hoping it'll group well. Most of my .223 stuff are bolt guns and I have a pet load that groups well but the bullets are 55 gr. |

What's the opinion of you guys/girls? Thanks Smoking deal! I picked up my 516 upper for about that much late last year and I absolutely love it. I'd love to be able to have an extended handguard due to my extended support arm shooting style, but that's being nit-picky. The 516 has been exceptionally reliable and very accurate in the 3-400 rds I've shot through it. I recently competed in a 3gun match with it and not only was it reliable, but very accurate out to 200yds while shooting steel supported barricade. This is my first piston AR, but a very nice perk to shooting piston ARs is how much cleaner the chamber and bolt carrier are compared to my DI guns. Not that I was trying to fix a problems that isn't there with my DI ARs, but the 516's piston system has worked flawlessly in my time shooting it and has made cleaning it a breeze. |

Glad I found this thread, not a lot of talk out there good/bad or otherwise on the Sig. I bought my 516 about 2 weeks ago, ran it for function, made several mag changes and have it sighted in close enough to hit center mass (still need good dope on it though). When I broke it down to clean it was noticeably cleaner than my Bushmaster patrol rifle would have been at the same ammo count. So far so good.
All I need now are good optics to top it off, have a cheap dot scope now, and it'll be a pig squealer. |
