Does Surefire make the "official" SOPMOD kit light? I was looking at the SOPMOD kit pic and the light looked like a black tube, not a fancy-smanchy Surefire. Thanks, Mike.

That black tube is the Insight tech VLI, Visible Light Iluminator. It was desgined to take CR123s and AA batts, and had an intergral rail mount. From what I understand it was a total peice of crap. They broke and didn't work well. I've never used one, but every once and a while you'll see one for sale, typicaly for a price way, way higher than a surefire light, for the collectors and airsofters. Surefire is not part of the SOPMOD package (I think) but it is used by just about everyone.

I saw two of them at the last gunshow I attended. $100 apiece so evidently not too exciting an item.

Thanks guys, so is it still the issue SOPMOD light?

Yes but everyone who can is using a Surefire and when new lights are purchased I understand they will be going to Surefire.  Various other units like Force etc have been using issued Surefires for quite some time.

I'm not in the military, but looking at pics I've  seen maybe ONE VLI. General consensus is they are TOTAL crap.

99% of the pics from the sandbox will show soldiers using the Surefire M95/96 and classic series lights and occasionally an M900.

I saw a picture of some 82nd airborne guys in "combat Tactics" magazine and it said "Soldiers in Afghanistan; Surefires one and all"
And front and center on the right was a guy with a AA Mini-Maglight taped to the forend of his M4.

"A truck-load of U.S. soldiers prepare to go out the U.S. mili-tary base in Bagram, Afghanistan, SureFires to one and all."
Page 89, Combat Tactics, Vol. 1, No. 2

There are at least three flashlights attached to weapons that I can see and they are 2AA "Mini-Mag" type flashlights. The soldiers in the truck do not appear to be like the other soliders featured with SureFire WeaponLights. My guess would be that they were not issued SureFires but the need became apparent and SureFires were issued to one and all. I've seen photos of the G2 being used both off and cable-tied to weapons.

I think one of the points the article made was that those who were issued SureFires found them durable, rugged, reliable and valuable tools. Those who weren't issued SureFires purchased their own, and those who didn't know about SureFires or couldn't afford them used whatever they could.

Surefire's are standard issue lights over in Iraq. I got one last year with the ARMS ring mount. All issue. And the VLI Tactical Illuminator is still being issued to troops as well. Last summer doing river patrols on the Tigris we were all issued VLI's. The Surefire we are issued is not rated water proof. Only water resistant. The VLI is water proof to 15 mtrs.

Hi guys;

I personally have a VLI on my M4, and have had no problems since the first day  I got it. It has been through a CQB courses and several patrol classes and got bang up pretty good and still works like a champ. I like the simple fact that I have the option of having daul power sources.

Surefire is listed under the SOPMOD kit as the [red]VBL[/red].

NSN: 5855-LL-L99-7589

That basically translate to SureFire M962SU06
