I'm don't know a whole lot about the old versions of the M16.  Cruising through the site though i absolutely love the looks of the early versions of the A1.  I have a question that is dumb for everyone here, but stil unknown to me... what the hell is an SP1?  what i've seen refered to as that looks something like the old xm16e1.  Can anyone help?

It's just the civilian version.  SP = Sporter.

And thanks for a real answer

Most people do nothing but stay on here all day and expect nothing but criticize any question asked because they've heard it already and have nothing better to do than stake this site out as "professionalonlyanddonteventhinkaboutdoinganythingotherwise" type of sit.

For some reason they don't talk about the civilian models much.

My plain jane Sp1 is one of my favorite rifles.

This stuff is very complicted to me. I thought I would catch on quicker because guns in general of course is a subject I love. But man, just about the time I think I have a handle on things some acronym or series of numbers come up and I have to start all over again connecting the dots.
Im starting with an SP1 upper now and gradually gathering what parts I think I need to build a reasonabl copy of an early AR/M16 smooth side. Or is that slick side? Arrgg!

The uppers from CDNN ar NOT Sp1 uppers.  They are M16A1 uppers.  I don't know why they advertise them as SP1's, cuase they won't even fit on an sp1 without a special adapter.

My question is: Why are there always so many SP1 (as well as other Colt large hole uppers) for sale? I scored a SP1 upper for $35 at the last G show and an A2 LH upper for $85. Why are so many people swapping uppers on classic colt lowers? The only idea I can think of is if these all come off police confiscated weapons and deputys are taking the parts and selling them before torching the lowers? Why else would there be a steady supply of Colt LH uppers?
