Sorry, didn't say thank you in advance for any help or thoughts. Also a quick tip on picture uploads would be great. Computers are not my bag.

Hello SoonerIke.  To post pictures they must be hosted somewhere, I have had good luck with photobucket.  Once you upload them there you can use code like the following in your posts:

I added four extra spaces in the above code so it would not really display the image, after the "[" character and before the "]" character.  With the extra spaces removed this website "obeys" this code and displays an image like this:

Oh, we all like pictures of anything retro here.

Be careful with that one.  11.5 barrel and screw on moderator is highly illegal withour proper paperwork,  inherited or not.  If left to you in a will they probably can't take it from you but you will need to SBR register or pin the moderator making it legal.  Not to mention if moderator is original they are also considered silencers / suppressors and also require additional paperwork.  Not trying to be bearer of bad news and relish seeing pics.  I'd be a little careful with that one though.  Lot of ATF traffric here.  We learn as we go and it sounds very, very nice.  One to be cherished.

the upper with the C H forge codes and C MP C barrel is way too late to be factory for that serial range.  the sp1 lower is large hole so is it currently using an adapter pin with the large hole ends with milspec center for the upper?  if the moderator is not permanently attached, do not mate that upper to the lower b/c at a minimum you have a SBR at that point.

if it's a true moderator that doesn't have the proper paperwork, that could potentially be more bad news.

if it were mine and i was in possession of an unregistered moderator, i would quickly have it torch cut or saw cut into many pieces.

yeah the original moderator makes a horrible suppressor but that's what the ATF classifies it as.  don't see the pics yet.

well........we all know that the moderators were pathetic suppressors on the Colt carbines that they came on. Thing is, and I would imagine what the ATF reccognized, was that the moderator could be unscrewed from the .223 chambered carbine and screwed onto any other barrel that was threaded 1/2-28.  Uneffective on .223 ,  but could fall into the "somewhat" effective catagory on a .22lr
I'll find out in a ilttle less than a year from now. Doing the paperwork thing now for my 607 and moderator build.

Nope, just the way the law reads.  Section 921.23, 18 USC: The terms “firearm silencer” and “firearm muffler” mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.

In short, any device designed to reduce the report of a firearm, no matter how ineffectual it may be, is, by definition of the law, a firearm silencer and thereby regulated.

I guess it was just an oversight that Colt sold moderator equipped carbines to civilians for YEARS before the ATF ruled them actual suppressors in 1975, requiring Colt to try and recall them through their dealer network.
