I picked up an unfired Colt SP1 today at an estate sale. The serial number is SP0172X. The rifle appears to be new with 0% wear anywhere. Does anyone have an idea of what it is worth?
Thanks!

If your correct on the serial # it is a 1964 model! Remember that if it starts with SP1 the 1 is part of the serial#!  Post up some pics of:

Bolt n carrier
Buffer
Upper and lower
Barrel markings
And overall pics

And we can help you identify correct parts! I would say you did excellent on the price, if it is a four digit SP1! I Paid $1200 ish for my 6000 range 1966 SP1!

The mag well is marked as following:
Colt
AR-15
CAL. .223
Model SP1
SER. SP0172X

The lower has an extra roll pin for the buffer tube(?)
The Selector Switch has a hole in the center on both sides.
The right side of the receiver on the mag well has a + sign

Upper
Unmarked except for the left and right marking for windage.
The Windage dial is marked 1,2,3,4,5
The upper is very finley finished as is the lower

Internals
The buffer has a grey peice on the front unlike buffers that I'm use to.
Bolt is hard chromed
Firing pin retaining pin that runs through the side of the bolt carrier has a flat head on it.
The screws have only 1 stake apeice

Barrel
The number 12 is stamped under the forward portion of the barrel.
On the right side of the barrel between the Front Sight Support Base's legs appears to be stamped with a "W" and a triangle beside it.
The front Sight Support Base has a very smooth finish with no markings.
3 Prong FH

Stock
The buttstock is solid with no trap door and the sling swivel protrudes fron the bottom. It is held in place with a pin running through the stock.

If I can figure out how to post pics I will do so.
Thanks for all of your help!

You need to host them on a site like photobucket.com

Or if you want, I can host them here in my media files storage.

You would need to email them to me.

IM me if you want me to post them for you.

Outstanding deal.  Absolutely outstanding.
Congrats to the OP!

I'll double your money.

Very nice, & you got a great deal.

ETA: The first part of my reply is not real, just a sign of jealousy. (I never find deals like that) I would not openly offer to buy something here in the Retro Forum against the COC.

OP,Just for the record, that W on the barrel is really an upside down M. M= magnetic partical tested,,the VP in triangle = verified proof.
You did extremely well with that score.Did you get the original box and or accessories with it?
I have one, sn 1183 born Nov 16,1964,Unfired in the box with all accessories.I will NEVER,EVER shoot it. Also for the record,1964 serial numbers ended at about 2500,since mine is Nov,it's safe to say yours was built in late Nov,early Dec 1964.

That was an excellent find and I don't believe I'd shoot that one either.  I'm not jealous but I would have jumped all over it.  I've seen quite a few lately from $700 to $2200 in not as good condition and not as low on the serial number.  Most had also been monkeyed with a bit.  I've been searching for a deal on a low number parts correct SP-1 also.  Will eventually find one I recon.  Got to be in the right place at the right time with cash.

So is that the original sling––black web with the sewn fold at one end (like the 601 slings)?
6/3/2011 12:37:54 PM EDT
[#29]
Yes it's the original sling. It also came with two original 20rnd Colt magazines. The widow is trying to locate the box for me.

My 1966 6xxx SP1 has a parked full round GK as well!!

Very nice rifle the OP has, aside from m1snipes it's the nicest one I have seen!!
