Howdy all,
Well, I've finally got the gumption up to build my own SPR. I looked a wide variety of sources for information before deciding what it's spec's would be. In the end, I am actually going to create something very similar to what Nutnfancy built. I'm using the following: Rainier Arms Upper (minus forward assist; http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=2940) Rainier Arms Lower (https://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=2124) BCM Buffer tube kit (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Stock-Hardware-Mounting-Kit-Mil-Spec-p/stock%20hardware%20kit.htm) Magpul CTR stock (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Magpul-CTR-Stock-Black-p/mag310%20%20black.htm) BCM Gunfighter Charging handle (https://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1894) CMC Trigger (http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/triggers-bottom-metals/triggers/tactical-trigger-group-curved-sku207000017-31715-44863.aspx) Fluted 18" AR-Stoner barrel (Wylde) (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/324277/ar-stoner-barrel-ar-15-223-remington-wylde-medium-contour-1-in-8-twist-18-fluted-stainless-steel-black-teflon) Midwest Industries 12" Gen 2 SS Handguard (http://tallahassee.backpage.com/SportsEquipForSale/157-midwest-industries-ar15-rifle-12-gen-ii-ss-free-floating-quad-rail/7008216) JSE Chromed BCG (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/ARR-973) PRI Gas block/folding front sight (https://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=267) It's not the cheapest, but I believe I will be very happy with this setup. However, I have run into either misinformation or my own ignorance regarding the gas tube. When I asked a sales person about which length gas tube should work for this (I know the barrel is mid-length, but what could it hurt to ask?) they said that I would have to get a low-profile gas block for the MI handguard and that the PRI would NOT work given the gas system. He also said I should get the 9" handguard (my question naturally being "so you want me to have 9" of unprotected barrel and unprotected hands from that barrel, given the fact that it is an 18"?"). Could some of you build-it-yourself geniuses please help this beginner out here?
Much thanks! fullm3taljacket |

A few comments on your plans: While there is nothing wrong with the BCM buffer tube I prefer the Spikes. The Spikes is $34 at AIM and is numbered on top. It also has three extra drain holes in the back of the tube. My stock preference is a SOPMOD or VLTOR. I've got a CTR and on a SPR they just aren't the best choice IMO. You may have personal experience and really like the CTR - in which case ignore what I just said as its really all a personal preference issue. BTW - if you are .mil you can get a B5 SOPMOD for $65 - and they have built in rotation limited QD sling mounts. |

jaqufrost,
Thank you for your post. I have a CTR already on another rifle and I really do care for it. That said, if it just won't fit what I want to do with it, I most likely will change it out with a SOPMOD-type. Thank you for the Spikes info on AIM, and the B5, however, this, clearly not being a budget build, I am opting for this: https://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=3857 for a sling attachment. Looking back on my typing this post, it seems as though I am shooting you down...couldn't be further from it. As always your (or my) mileage and experiences may vary, and I appreciate your assistance. fullm3taljacket |

I have one of the MI gas blocks. They work fine, though they add about an extra ounce over a YHM 9383. I prefer the YHM because the screws have teeth - which helps prevent them backing out. FWIW I've used the spikes, troy, dpms and YHM low profile blocks and my preference is the YHM, IIRC none of the others have the teeth on the screws. I like the cheekweld of SOPMODs/VLTORs on a SPR/accurate rifle build. It just feels nice. The CTR is still perfectly functional, it just doesn't have the sloped sides I like. |

Hydra-shokz,
I would love to find a rifle-length gas system barrel, but trying to find 18" fluted barrels alone is no minor undertaking, nor is it the cheapest. My only objections are just those, that I don't know of any and what is the cost-benefit analysis at that point? Because yes, I would have preferred it the originally posted configuration, at least it does save me money not to purchase that PRI tower. Now, If you know of any 18" fluted .223 Wylde barrels with rifle-length gas systems, PLEASE do let me know as I would certainly entertain the idea! fullm3taljacket |

Quoted: Although its not fluted. I am running the Superior Barrels SPR barrel. its one that is made from the Douglas blank. It shoots lights out I love it. Douglas barrels are great. Anyone who speaks negatively of them has never shot one. My recent SPR build is with a DPMS barrel. If it doesn't group like I want I'll try a Rainier barrel. I have a buddy with the Rainier ultra match and its been working well for him.

There is a ton of quality rifle builders on SH that could flute a barrel for you.
Personally I'd loose the flutes but if that's what you want I understand. http://proprecisionrifles.com/index.html |
