Looking for a scope for SPR I am building. Planning on using LaRue stealth upper with 20" barrel. Not sure I want to spend 1800-2000 for optics though. Any suggestions for mount and scope less than 1000. Want this to be good enough for SHTF weapon. Thanks |
SPR's use 18" barrels SAM's use 20" Luepold will cost you around $950 if you look. In my opinion I wouldnt get a 20" for a SHTF. 18" will shoot far enough (Confirmed at 800m). Scope and mount less than 1000 can be found. Look on the EE boards, they are there. I suggest the Nightforce 2.5-10 with the Larue mount. It will be around $1300 total and I think there is one on the EE right now. Good luck! |
| Here is the Leupold 1.5-5x20mm with The SPR Reticle and another absolutely awesome scope the IOR 1.5 - 8x26mm scope , In my opinion this is about as good as it gets unless money is an issue and if that's the case get a Super Sniper in IMHO |
Nice rifle!!!! |

Spud, welcome to the site. Glad you joined the team. The scope I'm most intrigued with is the Burris XTR 1-4. It's a true 1x at low power, and it's pretty affordable at $600ish. You can't go wrong with Leupold, but I don't like intermediate magnification on ARs. It's got to be able to be used fast in CQB, or else it's just a varmint gun. |
He could put a Doctor optic on top, but that would add to the cost. It would work up close though. I am looking at the Trijicon variables for my future SPR build. I can't remember what they are called right now...accupoint mabye? I think that's it. I Also want to put a mini red dot like the doctor on top. Best thing about Trijicon is NO batteries! |
The MK2 look like a good alternative for a lower cost alternative. Mike @ CSGW www.csgunworks.com [email protected] Here’s some testimonials about CS GunWorks FEEDBACK about CSGUNWORKS on AR15.com FEEDBACK about CSGUNWORKS on Snipersparadise FEEDBACK about CSGUNWORKS on the HIDE |
Why is it better? |
Better glass, better build quality/feel and better reticle (IMO). Controls are also nicer IMO. The IOR's controls, in particular, are stiffer/rough and not as nice IMO. |

For me personally I like a ACOG on a SPR. Thats the way I have mine setup. I also can swap over to my NF scope if needed but thats only if I was going bench testing. Otherwise the ACOG works best, is light and gets the job done. No math to do in your head when taking a shot etc. ym |
You are insane. IOR uses THE BEST GLASS IN THE WORLD. NXS is also more expensive and not FFP. IOR can be had in FFP and its built like a tank. The glass doesn't compare to IOR. Only glass in that catagory is S&B/Zeiss/Hensdolt, possibly USO. |

FWIW.. There is more to scope utility and quality that optical clarity-- things like repeatability, durability, and correct reticle/knob subtension come to mind. A local shooter used to shoot IOR and when I tried it, I was not impressed by the clarity or quality-- while I was adjusting the magnification ring the whole ocular housing came loose. I will shortly have one of the new IORs to eval, and I'll post comparative results here. -z |
+1 I loved my NXS |

Jap glass is every bit as good as the German stuff now. Schott has always been a leader in Glass, and all the top European scope makers use their glass. The major difference between the manufacturers is in the design and the coatings. I would venture to say the quality of the Nikon Tactical GLASS is the best I've seen. Their coatings aren't as good as their European counterparts, nor is their durability. We want it to be about the glass, but it's more about who does better math. |

Just my two cents on scopes in general. I have seen all the folks who throw out the big bucks for high end tactical scopes. If you do not really have a tactical mission, why spend the money? There are tons of excellent scopes for the AR that are not "tactical" and are reasonably priced. Just wondered why some would spend big bucks when they don't really need to. Yes, I know it is a free choice, but are you inpressing anyone by spending unnecessarily? I guess that also begs the question of why have an AR at all. Yes, they are fun and cool. But they are basically a tactical weapon. I guess we all are waiting for the war to happen.

You are right. The actual glass is so close that the human eye cant really detect the difference. The difference comes down to quality in the tube and internals, the coatings on the lenses, et cetera. A scope that has the best glass in the world doesnt mean shit if the turrets arent calibrated correctly and the scope is going to bend/break with a minor thump. Maybe the internals will come loose after a while. Ive done this before, and take a high end Swaro, SB or Zeiss scope along with a Leupold out at dusk, and look around through each scope. Look under trees and into the shadows. There is a noticable difference. Also look through each scope for extended periods of time. Almost always inferior cheap scopes will cause severe eye strain within 30 minutes to an hour. You can sit behind a high powered Swaro or Leica spotting scope or bino's all day and not feel even a 1/4 of the eye strain. |

I do like the IOR 1.5-8x26mm Tactical Scope Illum. CQB and the 2-12x IOR. I myself prefer the USO, NF NXS, and S&B. I have used the 2-12x on a 24” AR I was nice but put on one of our Custom Shop Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm LR/T M1 TMR. The Glass my not be as good but the scope is lighter, track just fine, and the turrets are very positive. ![]() If you can put out the cash for a S&B or USO then that would be they way I would recommend going. Sure! I have owned a 20",18"16"14.5" and 10.5" all of which I really like/liked. The 20" is fine but the 18" is more pointable and your not really giving up much range. Thats why the SAM program is not favored. There are even rumors that the 18" SPR's that are coming back are having the barrels changed for 16". However that is just rumor. My friend is a DM in the USMC. He carries a MK12 MOD 1. Why would the USMC chose a 18" barrel to put a 2.5-8 leupy on when the M16A4's are 20"? Because the gain is worth the loss. I run a 16" with a 2.5-10 NXS with the new zero stop turrets and a Trijicon red dot on top. I would not change a thing except I when I re barrel I am going with the N4 Noveske 16" because of the chrome. I love the 16" because when the can is on it still will be only 20" long. Here is a link to my rifle. The scope is different now. LINK TO MY REECE |
