I just came across a strange, to me, AR. I was thinking about trying to pick it up, if I could get it cheap enough, and install the receiver on my A2 upper. I currently have it on a D.P.M.S lower. Now for the strange AR. It has Colt Target H Bar .223 on the lowerwith a serial number of PMH 0034XX. The upper has 7.62 X 39 stamped on it. It has 5 mags that look like a factory mod that are banana shaped like an AK mag. What is it? Factory or a pieced together AR? Any help would be appreciated.

What does the barrel say? It might be a Colt factory 7.62x39 upper and the magazines sound like frankenmags. The caliber marking on the lower doesn't really tell you anything.

ETA - Do the magazines look something like this?

Yes, the mags are exactly like that one except his are longer. The upper is marked 7.62X39. Would this be a factory 7.62 with the lower marked .223?

It sounds like you have the 30 round 7.62 x 39 AR magazines...

THANK YOU. Yours looks like what I would expect for a Colt 7.62. The H Bar .223 lower is what is throwing me off.

I agree, they do look like the proper length for 30 rd. mags.

Does anyone know if Colt ever made a 7.62 X 39 AR that would have had the .223 marked Colt lower, rather than the 7.62 marked lower, like in the picture above? I don't want to pay too much for this combo, if it isn't factory. Thank you in advance.

The rifle does not have the upper it left Colt with.

Colt marked the uppers they sold separately with 7.62x39 on the upper receiver.

A factory Colt 7.62x39 AR15 will be the same as the one Shawnmt6601 posted pics of.

The "Frankenmags" are regarded as some of the best 7.62x39 AR mags available.

Thank you.( Both of you). I thought that it was strange. I have an A2 upper with a DPMS lower. If cheap enough, would it be worth purchasing the rifle and using the Colt H Bar lower on my A2 upper? Would it make a better AR or worth more? Thanks again.

If you can get it for a decent price, go for it. With a correct Colt HBar upper for the lower it will be worth more. I wouldn't pay a premium price as is. That 7.62x39 upper would be good for deer hunting with the right ammo.
