My RRA with the standard selector operates normally, no slam fires or bursts BUT I can rotate the selector back to the position that I would not expect it to rotate to. It does 'feel' like there is a 'bump/stop/guide' that I have to overcome to get it to rotate back and when it is rotated back it is raised out from the rifle a slight amount. I have NOT attempted to fire the rifle either with live ammo or function test while the selector is in this position. I have another AR with the star selector RRA sells and it does not rotate like this, only safe/fire.

Is it normal for the std. selector to move to safe, fire, and the third position  (it faces/points to the rear of the rifle) ?

thanks

Sounds like you have a M-16 safety selector. You might make sure your hammer and disconnector are correct.

Make sure that the selector only had two detents on the pin track, and only a single U slot cut.

Then pull the pistol grip, the selector detent, and the grip spring, to check if the receiver selector detent has burs or debries in the stepped hole.  The selector detent pin should drop into place in the receiver stepped hole without needed to be forced, and the tip of the pin protrude into the selector hole about a good 1/8" when fully seated upwards.  Also, depending on which grip you are using, the spring hole in it may be too deep and the spring not putting enough pressure on the selector detent to keep it in the selector groove for the pin.

So dry fit the selector detent first, to make sure it seating correclty, then maybe even install the grip and spring to make sure that they are spring loading the detent correctly as well.

On the selector, double check the detent slot and detents to make sure they are correct as well (only two detents, and not three for a semi auto rig.

Lastly, with everything back in place confirm that the selector and back of trigger are not having a binding problem as well.

Should be like this.

Thank you all for the help, I've been wanting to change my selector to the RRA star selector for some time (so both of my AR's have similar points of manipulation) and this looks like the perfect time. Just ordered one and a couple other things, will post back what I find after I swap it out.

As the previous poster said, looking at the selector from the top, you should be able to see if there is a flat as shown on the picture or another notch in the middle.  The flat is a semi selector, the auto has additional notches and the third detent you can't see until you remove the grip and pull it out.
