Today I tried naval jelly on a few items for an upcoming retro forgery and was surprised with the results on the safety switch. It's a no-notch safety I picked up by itself at a gun show and it came out gold, sort of like brass, perhaps. Do they make them out of brass? If not, what might it be?

I've only used the naval jelly once before and the results were pretty much as anticipated; the safety done that time came out a nice retro-y grey.

Coming...

ETA:

Lighting's not great, but here it is with a black thing and a grey thing for reference:

Kinda hard to tell if it's brass.  It looks like a very light beige park job.  I have a selector and a takedown pin that came out that way.  I don't know if it resulted from the original color underneath or a contaminate from the Naval Jelly.  Looks like a light Zinc Phosphate job.

Maybe try scraping the finish with a knife somewhere discreet.  Brass would likely be too soft for a selector.

ETA:  I have also seen some bronze finish colored parts before.  That's what that looks like.

Well I did some scratching on the back of the switch lever and it appears that's not just a surface finish. It'd go great with one of those titanium bolt carriers, if I was a matching belt and socks sort - which I'm not.

Maybe I've found part of Saddam's AR-15.

+1 That was the next question.  Maybe its a Titanium Nitride piece.  Can titanium be cast though ?

Yes, it is drawn to a magnet.

I recall some receivers made of a beryllium alloy that had a coloration like that, so maybe there are beryllium steel alloy parts kits? My only other guess for that color would be cad plated, but since you have already tried scratching through it that's probably not a prize-winning guess.
