I'm building an AA piston carbine and considering A Samson Evolution 7 Ext hand guard. The carbines I'm building are for a WROL/SHTF contingency.
From those who have Samson hand guards, how solid are these and do you think they are battle worthy? |
| We've got the 12.38" Samson/Rainier evolution model on my girlfriends daughters 16" LW BCM BFH upper. The thing is super solid and very light weight. Enough so a 9 (Almost 10) year old has no problem with it. Super solid, easy to install, just a pleasure to use. |

Mine actually started backing off the thermal bushings within one magazine of fire. This has happened multiple times now. After trouble shooting with Samson, the conclusion is that either the thermal bushing or Evo handgaurd itself are defective, or that the barrel nut is defective. My barrel nut is from Rainier. I seriously hope it isnt my barrel nut because my Samson gas block and AAC muzzle device are going to be a pain in the ass to remove.
Samson is doing their part though, and that shows that they stand behind their products.. I have sent my Evolution in, and they are replacing it...without me asking them to, and my guess is testing the one I sent in too. If it fails again, my educated guess is that it is the barrel nut. That is my experience with the Evo rail so far. I will post an update as soon as I get the new Evo from Samson, install it on this upper, and take it for a spin. |

Most of the issues with these rails, from what I have found on youtube and forums, tend to be related to the barrel nut or installing the thermal bushings upside down. Hope your issue is easy to solve.
Based on the feedback (THANKS EVERYBODY!) I went ahead and ordered a pair of them through a local shop. They should arrive in about a week, then the build parts are off to a local place for Cerakote.With any luck I will be fumbling the parts together in about three weeks. |

While I was literally driving to the range when I posted this yesterday, I did not get to shoot. I was grossly underdressed for where I went as I had never been there before and the grass was a little tall. Made it out to a different range today. The Samson started to get warm at about 80rds of fairly rapid fire. 20 more and it definitely would have been to hot to hold. I switched to a different rifle and let it cool for probably ten minutes at most and it was back to air temp. Granted it was fairly windy and cooler than normal for this time of year. |

Thanks again to all for your input. I did go with the Samson rail and just finished my builds this week. After tightening it down it's as solid as if the receiver and rail were a single piece. I'm very happy and would recommend this rail to anyone. The best part is how well it works with the Adams piston system and extends the hand guard a few inches longer than the normal carbine length. As soon as I can figure out how to post a picture you can actually see I'll show you what I'm talking about.
One thing about the installation - as you tighten the screws that hold it in place it will attempt to rotate downward. In the video Samson put on youtube they suggest you use your finger to leverage against it so it rotates into proper place. You can't do this with the Adams Piston block in place as there isn't room, and it's much easier to install the piston block with the rail loose. I wound up attaching a scope to the piston block that had a base long enough to join the two sections together. They came out perfectly aligned. |
