What is the best magnification for 300 yards? Also, which is better- variable or fixed for that range. Last, which scope would you recommend? |
I guess it depends on what you are shooting at. For "big game," anything between 2 and 10 power would be adequate.
Either would work. 2x, 3x, 3.5x, 4x, 2-7x, 3-9x or 3.5-10x would all be fine.
Either a compact or full-size ACOG. |

Let me know your type of target at that range, your eyesight rating, and shooting ability. As some general advice, I found that I get tighter groups and better accuracy when I don't dial my magnification to the max at every range. To get tight groups, within MOA at 300 yards, I use 4X. Then again, I get sub MOA to MOA at 300 yards with my AR-15 with zero mag, using iron sights. Other than that, the rest is up to you to determine. However, a variable scope will allow you to make this determination. A fixed scope...you will have to predetermine your preferred power setting before purchase. I NEVER BUY A SCOPE OVER 10x FOR HUMAN SIZE TAGETS AND LARGER. For my varmint gun I have 24X, which most of the time I only need 16X. |

I have astigmatism so iron sights are out. I'd be shooting at a 3" spot at the 300 yard range. I do have a 15 fixed power scope on my Ruger varmint gun but haven't used it at that range yet. Just trying to get a feeling if that would be good enough. The longest that I shot it was 200 yards cause that's the longest range that is at our club. However, I just joined another club that has a 300 yard range. |
