I'm building a Mega MaTen & I've decided on 2 scopes & was hoping you guys could offer some suggestions . The first scope i was looking at is the USOptics SN3 3.2x17 with 35mm tube & 1/4 moa knobs & a MOA scale reticle . This build with all the options I want is gonna run me around $2800 out the door with mounts .The other scope I'm looking at is the Vortex Razor HD 5x20 with the moa reticle . That scope is gonna run me about $2300 with mounts & all the options I want .I know the USOptics scope is amazing and I've had a chance to actually pick it up & look through it , but is there any reason to get the Vortex over the USOptics other than the difference in price ?

OK, I'm going to go way out on a limb here and say what I really think and of course, it's just my opinion. I haven't messed with the particular models that you are talking about, but I have messed with and shot USO and Vortex HD. I really didn't think that the USO's optical quality was anything to write home about. In other words, it was nothing special, considering the class were talking about in that price range. I certainly didn't think that it was better than a Nightforce, that's why I went with the Nightforce. As a package, the USO is built like a TANK and that is a part of its appeal as a tool meant for the rough stuff. I do know a few guys that have them and they love them. I don't know if this is so because they feel that the glass is so good or because they feel that they should love them due to the price they paid. I do, however, know one guy that managed to break his. The top turret quite working, but I suppose that this could happen to anything.
The Vortex HD that I shot was nothing short of amazing. If optical quality is your first concern, this may be the way to go. I just picked up a Nightforce 5.5 -22X50. When I went to look at that, the Vortex was certainly in the running. I got the Nightforce because, well, it's a Nightforce AND I got a blow out price on it because they've discontinued the non hi speed turret models. If you can, check out the Vortex HD before you buy the USO. Of course, I don't think that the Vortex has the tank like build. In any case, you seem to be in a fortunate circumstance. You apparently have the coin to get into a very nice scope and with the choices that you've selected, I don't think that there's a wrong answer. Each will have it's advantages. I can't comment on the tracking ability of the Vortex, I only shot it. Didn't really run it through its paces. With the last USO that I shot, the guy was doing a box test at 100 yards and it was looking spot on to me. You might also want to check the field of view on each scope at its lowest setting and see if that will be enough for your purposes. With my 5.5-22X, the scope is almost useless at anything closer than 100 yards, if that matters to you. I have mine on a .308 and I don't shoot at anything with it unless it's at least 100 yards away. |
