I recommend you post this in the optics area.

And I recommend you look at the Millet DMS-1.  Costs $200.

Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40. Good scope, super clear, well priced. Can get it for around $150 on ebay.

The Nikon Team Primos from swfa.com is the best scope under $200 optically.  Other good scopes are the Weaver V series, Bushnell 3200 and Nikon Buckmaster.

simmons prohunter SF TT MD 6x21x44
mueller 8.5-25x44 AO
and there was a budget fixed 6X40 MD TT that a friend uses on his 223 that really works great but I can`t remember the name brand, swift?maybe?

I have the Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 and it's very nice, clear, and seems to be high quality. Corrections are consistant, it tracks perfectly, and the scope returns to zero.

If you're talking about 'out to 300 yds' I'd say go with more magnification than 9x. Now I know that some of you will say that you've shot out to 600 yds with only a 9x scope, but personally ... I like to be able to see what I'm shooting at. At 300 yds you'll see the scope move to the beat of your pulse

300 yds is pretty far away. I've shot over 200 yds with my Bushnell 3200, but experienced what I would referr to 'no real degree of accuracy'. I either hit or missed, but not much controll of where I was hitting the target (human silhouette). Maybe it was the ammo I was using (Wolf), perhaps some wind, and lack of experience, but I do feel that more magnification would be WELL worth a few bucks more.

Oh ... and if you're shooting that far then you'd better have a pretty darn good spotting scope or a telescope to see your bullet holes

not to try to push any particular scope, but it's all in what you want.

i like more magnification for some things, less for others.
i have a DMS-1, and with 4x i can shoot just as good of a group at 300 yards with it on 4x as i can my mark4 on 14x.
with 4x it is very easy to center on a 6" circle at 300 yds.

for shooting 300 yards and beyond primarily, more magnification is fine, but if you want to shoot primarily less than 100 yards, maybe not so fine...

a 3-9 variable is popular for a reason, you can keep it on 3 for a wider field of view, but then crank it up for better target ID, or longer ranges.  people shoot 1000 yds with 10x all the time (iron sights for that matter).

a good mid range variable would probably suit you well for most tasks. 2.5-10, 3-9, 4-14.  no need to go 24 or 30x unless you know you'll never shoot anything close.

also, if you want to shoot precisely at longer ranges, you'll want something that will adjust properly & return to zero.

have fun shopping, and try to get the best you can afford.
not long ago, i was doing what you are, and found that "decent" quality is hard to find for cheap.
save for another month if you have to, and spend that time researching.....
