not to try to push any particular scope, but it's all in what you want.
i like more magnification for some things, less for others. i have a DMS-1, and with 4x i can shoot just as good of a group at 300 yards with it on 4x as i can my mark4 on 14x. with 4x it is very easy to center on a 6" circle at 300 yds. for shooting 300 yards and beyond primarily, more magnification is fine, but if you want to shoot primarily less than 100 yards, maybe not so fine... a 3-9 variable is popular for a reason, you can keep it on 3 for a wider field of view, but then crank it up for better target ID, or longer ranges. people shoot 1000 yds with 10x all the time (iron sights for that matter). a good mid range variable would probably suit you well for most tasks. 2.5-10, 3-9, 4-14. no need to go 24 or 30x unless you know you'll never shoot anything close. also, if you want to shoot precisely at longer ranges, you'll want something that will adjust properly & return to zero. have fun shopping, and try to get the best you can afford. not long ago, i was doing what you are, and found that "decent" quality is hard to find for cheap. save for another month if you have to, and spend that time researching..... |
