Ok, so i got a new rifle 223 caliber and i want to replace my red dot bushnell with something that will be good for longe range shooting. I have 100 bucks to deal with and am looking to get a tactical style scope. I don't know a whole lot about choosing a good scope or how to read magnification on them, any help would be greatly appreciated..

That's not much to work with.  It will help a lot to describe your 223 caliber rifle, define long range, and tell us want you want to shoot at.  That said, if you're talking factory new, I really doubt there is a sub-$100 "tactical" optic worth having, so start watching the Equipment Exchange like a hawk, and maybe subscribe to the SWFA Sample List and see if you can find something there you like.  Good luck.

With that budget, a fixed power 4x Nikon.

First, what is your definition of "long range".

Second, what type of targets will you be shooting the most. Paper? Steel? Varmints?

Thrid, $100 isn't gonna cut it. It barely buys you a functioning scope. You are going to need to at least double that to find something worth while.
