Does adjusting the magnification on a scope change your POI. My buddy was telling me at the range yesterday that he never adjusts his magnification since it will change his POI and throw off his numbers. He said some scopes do and some don't. Is this true?  I don't adjust mine much, but I never noticed a POI change.

The adjustment is called paralax. If your scope has paralax adjustment, poi should not change.

No not parallax. My scope has that as well. The magnification was what my buddy was talking about.

POI should be the same throughout the zoom range.  If it changes, there is something wrong with the scope (or it is quite common on the el cheapo scopes).  I would not accept it on a quality scope.

The numbers part is true if his scope does not have the reticle in the first focal plane (FFP).  If you have a FFP scope, you can use your ranging reticle at any magnification (the size of the reticle changes with magnification), if you do not, there will only be one magnification (usually the largest) where you can accurately range and set dope for.  The part about his POI change is untrue.

That's what he was talking about.. having the reticle in the first focal plane. Now it makes sense. Only thing is he doesn't have a ranging reticle, just the standard crosshairs. The numbers he was talking about are just where his elevation turret is set when we shoot the 100, 200, and 300 yard backstops. It's not a cheap scope. It's $1000 plus leupold.

Adjusting scope magnification will not throw off POI on a 1000$ scope (it shouldn't on a 100$ scope either)  Your friend is being overly paranoid.

In a non-FFP reticule, reticule-based measurements won't translate without doing some math.  With a FFP reticule, all your numbers will work.

Thanks for all the replies. It makes perfect sense now.
