I have a 16" bushy that has been shipped off to KKF to have some work done and I figured I would have a nice surprise waiting for her when she gets home. I am still a newbie to AR and basically rifles in general and I am trying to decided if I should get a Leupold Var II 3-9x40 tactical or a red dot such as a aimpoint or EOtech. I haven't shot my AR that much but I know I want something more than the irons (I know I know "practice with the irons", and I will, I will-later:)) Most of the shooting I will be doing will not be more than 100 yards, seeing how that is the longest range around here. I value the opinions of the more experienced and would just like to know what you think. Thanks, James |

If you really are only going to shoot <100yrds, I suggest the EOTech. I have both an EOTech and an Aimpoint, and much prefer the EOTech. However, if you want something with a bit of magnification for longer distances, that can also be used as a "snap shoot" red dot, try looking at an ACOG with BAC. I just got a TA31A, and it is really neat! |

Well I went to the gun shop today to see if I would actually look at a couple of them and here is the deal. 1-Aimpoint - didn't have 2-EOtech - didn't have 3-ACOG - Didn't have 4-Reflex II 12moa triangle - I really liked the look of this sight and the fact that it didn't take batteries. They also seem reasonably priced. The thing I didn't like is that I can't see the triangle clearly, it is sort of distorted. I have read about people with astigmatism (spelling?) having problems with these type of sights. Anyone know anything about that? What can I do? Am I screwed? 5-Leupold CQT - I will not buy this sight. Nice but very expensive. I really liked it alot though. I could see the dot fine with no distortion, very clear. Funny how I couldn't see the triangle of the reflex very well. So does anyone with astigmatism know what I am talking about? I guess I will most certainly need to physically check out all the sights before I buy one. Thanks, James |

James -- Get the Reflex only if seeing the dot in less than perfect shooting conditions isn't a requirement. In other than broad daylight or with night adapted eyes in no light this dot is very hard to pick up. Inside a gun shop is more of a "normal" than perfect lighting condition and the reason you had trouble with the Reflex dot. The Aimpoint CompM2 is fully competent out to 400 and 500 meters -- not that you'll ever see any targets out there unless you're operating in fairly unique conditions. Telescopic sights are nice, but not fast. 4x is all you need at any ranges you can hit with a general purpose rifle like this. It's a matter of what and how you shoot. I'd buy the CompM2 before buying any telescopic sight because it's excellent out to any range I'll ever need to shoot and has superior target acquisition and transisition. -- Chuck |
| JBritt, I too amy struggling with this issue and I'm looking for something that provides smaller than 3MOA at 100yds with magnification so that I can use my rifle for hunting. I like the hologram type w/ 1MOA but they don't offer magnification desired, and most "red dot" scoped have too large of dot for my needs past 75 yds. I have decided to take a Leupold vari-xIII 1.5x5 (from a lever action) and mount it on an AR. At 1.5 I still have excellent close range aqusition of target but can zoom to 5x for distance/accuracy needed for "humane" hunting shots. Mine does not have the illuminated retical but Leupold makes them. No batteries required! |
