Hey everyone!!! Just assebled an AR-15 carbine. It has a 16in barrel. I want a scope on it for shooting coyotes. I was looking at a 6-24x50. The only problem is the scope is 16in long. Do ya'll think that would look bad? Any suggestions will be helpful!!! What size do yall think? I would like to be able to shoot out to about 300 yds. Possibly a mil-dot? Is a carbine suitable enough for coyote hunting? What about a 4-12x40? |

dont matter imo if it 'looks bad'--the more imp question is, will the scope and AR setup work for you and your purpose? mil dots are nice, esp if you know how to use em properly--if not, then it might not be worth it to opt for em if they cost extra i think that a 16x or so would work fine |
Long as it works, so what? It's not a fashion contest, it's a tool. What glass are you using BTW? |
+1 even a mid-grade simmons is better than a barska imo i'd look to a super sniper (unfortunately, its non-variable), bushnell, nikon, or even redfield i've heard mullers are pretty good for the price too, but i dont know about thier long term durability use
you really cant all the time...one of the main descrepencies is price range; a barska, BSA, etc POS scope will usually run way less than other brands (say ~$100 for a top end model) another clue is that its made in china (yes, lots of manf, even good ones are outsourcing to china, but at least thiers still work pretty decent) the problem is, half the time, w/ any amt of use, they break apart; next to that, clarity and its sealedness sucks eventually, over time, you just begin to realize which are of reasonable quality, and which ones are chicom crap YMMV |
Let me distill the general comments. If you are buying a scope based on its looks and its price (ie, Barska), then any coyotes you kill at 300 yards may be the unluckiest damn dogs that ever walked the planet. The heart/lung area of a coyote is roughly the size of a 20 oz soda bottle laid on its side. (Look for a thread on predatormasters.com). I encourage you to put one out at 300 yards and think about the kind of scope you want some more. |
I also use lower powered scopes for Coyotes. I think most of my shoots were well under 150 yards here when calling them. I do use higher mag scopes for groundhog hunting as they stay within a small radius feeding. I have plenty of time to laser the yardage and make the adjustments. |
