Got a Bushmaster varminter, need to put glass on it for coyote hunting, probably 300 yards and under hunting situations, from daylight hunting to night hunting in the moonlight over snowcover, would like to keep cost under $1000 if possible. LET ME HAVE IT!!!!!!

IOR 2.5-10x42 with illum ret, IOR 4-14x50 with illum ret, both under $1000, good glass, nice objective size and decent quality.

We just put a lot of new 2009 Leupold VX-3's on our samplelist. They were opened up and used for current web pictures.

http://www.samplelist.com/default.aspx?display_num=10&mfg_selection=7&prod_type=-1&hide_sold=false

This one wouldn't be bad: Leupold 4.5-14x40 VX-3 w/ Varmint Hunters reticle - 599.95

There's also a Swarovski 6-18x50 American over there for 999.95.

For the money.......Bushnell 4200 Elite 6-24x50

B & H Photo (camera store believe it or not) has them for $639 including shipping and they'll send you a $50 gift card.  I've done business with them before (camera equipment) and they're great to work with.

Here's a link to the scope on their site (they also have products from other manufacturers and their prices are pretty good).

Spend the next $200 on a bipod and mount and then the next $200 on a good set of rings (and a base if you don't want to mount directly to the top of the rail).

Are there any major problems with mounting directly to the rail or is this just concern over recoil altering zero of the scope faster?

I'm also currently looking for a scope for my Bushmaster Varminter.

Based on my research, I'd ask the following questions....
1) Have you considered that anything over 9x is overkill for up to 300 yards?
2) Do you care about the warranty of the scope? If so, look at the fine print (limited lifetime versus no questions asked)
3) Will you be putting flip up BUIS on the rifle?

I was all set to get a Trijicon Accupoint scope but then saw that their warranty is not lifetime when you consider the illumination system.

Update us as to what you get.

No, its just that for most people mounting directly on the rail with standard rings puts the scope too low, especially for proper cheek weld.  On my 24" Eagle Arms/Armalite Target rifle a half-inch riser puts the scope at a very comfortable height for me.
