Is sealing optics in a vacum with a silicant/oil/wd40 a bad idea?

Quoted: Is sealing optics in a vacum with a silicant/oil/wd40 a bad idea? I'm not sure what you getting at here. There is no "vacuum" inside the main tube of a scope; I don't know what you mean by "silicant"; as for oil or WD40, I'm trying to think of how either can seal and what would they seal, if they could seal. What did you do to your scope? |

Most scopes are pressurized with Nitrogen. Sealing it in a vacuum bag will lower the outside atmospheric pressure, thus making the scope's seal's "work harder" at keeping the Nitrogen where it belongs.
Adding oil or WD40 could eventually damage the seals if the seals are petroleum-based products, like silicone rubber. Over time the oil/WD40 will make the seals swell up, and then eventually it could dissolve them. If you must, I'd go with the silica bag for moisture control. Personally, I'd put the scope in a sealed plastic bag with silica. Forget the vacuum. |

Thanks, I was worried about the scopes seals when exposed oil or some other preservative for long times, I just dont want anything damaged if a terrible boating accident were to befall my gun-safe.
I dont guess theres a way to seal an optic while its still attached to the weapon without removing said optic?, its a good Luipold so loosing my zero is preferable to buying another. |
