I will be buying an optic for my first AR soon and am having some difficulty selecting a magnification range - there are too many choices!  I plan to shoot from 0-300 yards and would like to find out the appropriate magnification range.

I was wondering if you AR gurus can enlighten me on the practical shooting distance associated with each of the following magnification ranges: 3-12x42, 4-16x42, 5-20x44.

Thanks a lot.

anti material sniping range distances

Now seriously it depends what type of AR you are planning to buy.
If you want a carbine with a good balance between practical accuracy and engagement speed  a 1-4x is the way to go.
If you want a rifle and want  to engage targets at greater distances with a higher level of accurate shot placement you will be better served with a higher mag. scope.

Are you trying to shoot sub MOA groups on paper or just trying to "hit the target" somewhere on the target?  Also how much shooting will be 0-50 yards as opposed to 200-300 yards?

I have an RRA 18" Varmint and would like to strive for sub-MOA groups (which will take practice, of course).  My local range has a maximum distance of 300yds but I will probably start from 50yrds and work my way out to 300yds.  At this point, I do not know what distance I will shoot the most at, which is why I want to have a scope that is flexible enough over the 0-300yd range.

I have a 4x16x40 on my spr and I find
I keep it on 16 often. At 300 yards I
wish I had more magnification. The
first time I shoot at the 300 yard line
I realized I should have gotten more
power for these old eyes.

If you are shooting 300 you will want all the magnification you can stand if you want to shoot sub MOA groups.

I've also been looking for a scope for months now. When you say "you can stand" do you mean price-wise, or is there something about usage and eye fatigue?

Is there an FAQ on this somewhere?

Thanks in advance,
Walsh

The downsides of higher magnification are a smaller FoV and exit pupil.  Mirage will also be more noticeable.  There is no free lunch in this world.  I have never found the need for greater than 10x at 300m, whether shooting paper or venison.  YMMV
