Howdy Folks,
I'm a rank beginner assembling my first lower. I've progressed to the point of installing the safety selector and I'm having a problem. When it’s in place, and the grip secured, it won’t move at all. The AR-15 build page suggests shortening the spring and/or cleaning out the spring hole in the grip. The hole is clean....nothing obstructing the spring from entering and seating in the hole. I don’t know how much to shorten the spring. Any suggestions? A couple things I’ve notice about the detent and the matching holes in the selector itself. The detent is cone shaped with a fairly sharp point. The holes in the selector look deep and sides of the holes are 90 degrees....not slanted which would help the selector slide from one position to the other. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Tom I. |
| If the holes were slanted it would flop around. This is normal. As long as you are putting the detent in correctly I would try a slight bit more force but not mongo strength to try and move the selector. If you still can't move it trim about 1/2 to 1 coil off and recheck it untill it fits as desired |

Well, guys, I hit the panic button too soon. Thanks for your replies.
I took it down again, checked everything, watched the Brownell Video and reinstalled everything with the selector set to SAFE. Now it works. It's stiff, but it works. All the safety checks are OK. What was different? The first time I assembled it, I followed the instructions here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782 In the photo showing the selector being installed it is in the FIRE position....so that's the way I installed it. Brownell's says SAFE position.....??? Anyway, it works. Thanks Again. Tom I. |
