Not exactly a retro, but...does have a Colt C7 receiver

I have been assembling parts for this upper for a while now. Buying/selling and trading, and ended up with an early M4 upper – all Colt including an early M4 barrel with a non F marked FSB.

Really like how it turned out. The parts all have the same wear and patina and just look “right” together. The barrel was brought out to 16 + by a cool little spacer made by Mr. Braceman (Yes, now known as Mr. Braceman )

Question to you all – IDF clone? BHD clone? Fixed stock truck gun or early M4 clone? Or I have both an A1 and A2 style lower to choose from depending on how I proceed.

Put it on a lower with  a Type D stock.  I have used a C7 upper with an M4 barrel on a lower with a Type D and it is one sweet shooting gun.

I see that and start channelling Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally.  "Yes, yes, yes!"

Exactly like that.  The gun felt rock solid and pointed like a dream.  Recoil was smooth, cheek weld was great, and the was accurate to boot.  Also slung great with a GI sling.

A GP style sling on a fixed stock carbine is better - trust me. I don't rave about much, but it's just so fast, so comfortable, you can hasty sling them, climb with them and great on transitions...and they are cheap.

Morg - I have not heard you mention anything about that in the past...

Also that configuration has the added benefit of easily making it a featureless gun out here in Ca with a grip fin. The muzzle device I had John pin is a EGW A2 style brake and CA legal for a featureless gun.

For you non CA people that don't know what a featureless gun is, please Google it as I can't bring myself to dirty these sacred retro pages with a picture

Looks perfect

Morg,,  Mike NDS, and myself  and others will testify as fixed stock carbine junkies.  Back in 1983 I was building a SGW XM177 clone from parts; one piece at a time.
But in those days you could not buy the SP1 carbine stock by itself. Colt would not sell them.  I had a surplus fixed stock assy and just so I could handle the rifle I put it on
just for fun.  I thought it was the ugliest thing I had ever seen.  But man did it fit and feel right.  No turning back after that.

LOL. I don't get evangelical about very much, but the combination of a GP strap on a fixed stock carbine is one of those things that works better than the sum of its parts dictate it should. The only thing better would be a 607 stock - best of both worlds.

I'm getting the idea that I should keep it with a fixed type D...

Truth time. I have built AR's for myself and my son. Until recently my 17 YO daughter really has not shown an interest but she joined us on a desert trip and now wants a AR15 to join the S&W K frame .22 I gifted to her at birth. This will be her carbine. It will be equipted with a .22 CMMG bolt till she gets the hang of it. Next Saturday will be her second outing and the "gifting" Pictures to follow.

My wife remains happy with her Sig P230 and Rem 870 in 20 Gauge. Things could be worse...

I remember seeing a picture of a fixed-stock triangle handguard middy carbine somewhere on the retro forum.  Might have been Harlan from NoDak's.  I think it had a set of JT's brown faux Bakelite stocks.  Seriously drool-worthy rifle.

Looking good Swifty.  Not many who try a type D and GP sling on a carbine aren't gonna like it.  All the internals are gonna like it also.  Thanks DocMike.  Unless possibly riding around in a hummer saving the world from themselves.  I have 10 AR's.  7=type D with GP or M1 garand sling for rifles. 1-Colt aluminum with GP , 1- type E for match adding weight with 1903 and one lonely M-4 with GP that cried wee! wee! wee! all the way home.

I have a "D" buttstock on my retro rifle, and I just ordered a new black GP sling.  It came with a crappy sling that you had to remove each end from the buckle in order to remove it. It is going into the "useless" parts bin.

That's what I did... BTW, I love your Jeep! Every time you post a shot of it I enjoy it. I have not restored a car in a couple years and never an old military Jeep, but man that makes me want to. Something like that, I'd completely rebuild the underside and leave that body alone. It is just to cool!

Perfect. Very close to what I'm building right now (the carbine I mean...)  I'm using a 603 upper though. Very nice! As always, I love the jeep. I think you ought to leave the 'experienced' finish an maybe just clear coat it like the Gas Monkey garage does sometimes.

Well...the Jeep may be going to a local retro forum member. Got enough on my hands with one starting college and the '66 Chevy...and repairs to the left front end of college bound females transportation

That is a nice upper Fast,  I wanted a BHD carbine as well and I purchased all the parts for the same build, but then " just said no"...  figured I would build a slick side 20" upper  to go with the carbine upper. (Still haven't built that yet)

I'm gonna have to dissent here and say that that upper deserves to be an RO723 build!

It's perfect for a "BHD" era carbine, and will feel great that way - anyways, RO727s are much better documented on fixed stock lowers.

So yea know when something just works? Wasn't able to get out to the Desert last Saturday, but I did hit the indoor range this morning and shot the 723 upper on a fixed stock lower (AKA a MORG 308 special)

Now I do know that my elderly eyes need some help , but I don't feel too bad with these groups shot in a dark indoor 25 yard range. The loads were a brand new mix - 25.5 grains of BL-C (2) with mil surp 55 grain "pulls"...in other words not match ammo!

]

This was the configuration I used and yea I was playing with the sight adjustment from target to target. Last 5 shots are on the lower right target at about 11 O'clock center - and I ran out of my test loads to do the final dialing in.

]

I will say using that short barrel with a Ca Legal muzzle brake/powder combo gave me more of a flash then I am used to seeing! (or it could had been the dark range)
