ok i can locate the serial number on the lower. it is obvious. what about the upper? is there a serial number on the upper? and if so where is it located?

There is no serial number on the upper of an AR-15.  The lower is the piece considered by the ATF to be the firearm and therefore must be purchased from an FFL dealer as you would any other firearm.
