I've got a Bushie 20" and I want to actually have two rifles:

A 16" lightweight carbine
A 20" HBAR for CMP matches and long range shooting

From a practical and cost perspective, what is my best route?  Send the service rifle to have a new trigger and SS barrel with free floating tube, or to buy an upper?

For the purposes of costs, I would consider two uppers and one lower.

EDIT: Does anyone make a free floaing tupe for 16" shorties?  Shorty or mid length, I don't care.

You might consider installing a Rock River two stage match trigger in your BM lower.  The trigger is predictable, within CMP weight limitations, and because it is a two stage trigger, it is NOT unsafe for use in a defensive role.  Then just configure your two uppers the way that you want....Vola! Two guns in one.

What about the upper?  Is it unrealistic or cost prohibitive to convert my 'normal' 20" to a free floating tack driver with SS barrel?

Would it be cheaper to sell the upper and buy a nice CMP upper?

I'm dreaming about a lightweight 16" lower too, preferrably lightweight.  2MOA would be enough for this plinker.

Sell a rifle and buy

All RRA from (pete in NH)
(1 RRA lower with NM trigger for $265) 1 RRA SS DCM upper for $600 1 DCM buttstock weight $25 and 1 Turner hi-power sling $45

This is the cheapest route and will take you all the way to camp perry. I had one of these and it grouped 4/10in at 100yds with iron sights. (prone and with a sling groups averaged an inch at 100yds)

otherwise you need NM sights, a NM trigger, a Match grade barrel, buttstock weight, free-float tubed guards, NM handguards, NM sling (add this and it comes to around $900)< when the RRA rifle comes to $960 or so COMPLETE
