I am building what will essentially end up being a service rifle. I just like to think of it was an accurate KISS M16 clone. Anyways, I'm planning on getting one of the service rifle float tubes so I can have the standard looking hand guards but I can't find any reviews of the tubes from various manufacturers. I know that some of them, like the WOA tube, use a special gas tube so the slot in the tube doesn't have to be so long. I've also read that some of them silver solder vs. welding the parts together. How much real world difference do these kind of changes make? If anyone could please shed some light on the differences I'd appreciate it.

an AR15 without a DCM/CMP ff tube will out shoot most of the people who shoot them.  so , buy what you can afford and upgrade as you feel your equipment is holding you back.  the WOA is considered top of the line, but many DPMS RRA, And Armalite tubes are used also.

DPMS= long slot and stock gas tube
RRA= short slot and custom gas tube that comes with it.
Armalite= not sure, i haven't held one

IIRC these are all in the $100 range.  they also each have the front sling swivel welded on at slightly different positions.

i went with the RRA because i found one on sale at Midway for $75 with the gas tube and handguards....i also like the forward position of the RRA sling swivel better.

I have limited knowledge, but I will provide my past experience.  I have a Bushie DCM tube, not bad, but the two pieces rely on LocTite to hold them together.  I have had to take it apart more often then I care to talk about.  So, for $105, you can buy the White Oak from ADCO.  This has the lock ring, no need for LocTite.  This is the way to go.
If you shoot a lot, and you get better at like 300 yards, you will appreciate the FF tube.  If you are a casual shooter, like once or twice a year, don't bother with the tube as the previous poster intimated.

Thanks for the information! I have done some more research on my own and have turned up a little bit about the WOA tube. It sounds great and that's what I think I'll be getting but I haven't really heard a lot about the RRA tube to compare. I shoot quite a bit (though not competitively - yet) and I'd like to shoot something slightly more accurate than my 16" RRA. I played with the idea of getting some kind of float tube/rail for that but I kind of like the normal hand guards and I though "Why not just make another?"

Yep... I know. There's no cure now.
