My buddy has a Colt match target AR15. It has problems with the spent shell getting stuck in the chamber. The bolt never opens after the shot. It sometimes takes quite a bit of force to get it open. It has done this since new. We have tried different magazines, different lowers, and different ammo with no luck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. He spent a lot of money on this rifle and it has never has worked right. Thanks

Just to be clear, is this happening with every round fired?  If it's happening with every round fired you have a major league gas problem... I'd wonder if the gas tube is in upside down, the gas port is incorrectly drilled, or the FSB isn't centered properly on the gas port...  The gas tube is an easy 2 minute fix, gas ports or FSB centering problems can be a bit more difficult, but certainly not impossible.

If the problem is periodic, I'd suspect a very tight or rough chamber or perhaps a tight headspace problem...

Your friend should consider contacting Colt Customer Service.  If you do have a headspace problem that's normally beyond the average home ARsmith to properly correct...  You may want to cross post in the Troubleshooting forum and get the opinion of Dano and Tweak...

1 in every 10 rounds or so....it has done it since new...never has worked right.....what could i do to check the gas system?

With the problem being periodic the gas system is most likely not the culprit.  I'd focus on the chamber itself... a tight headspace or a rough/undersized chamber would be my first guess...

Anything I could do at home....or is it a gunsmith job?

First thing - Read the Manual-
www.biggerhammer.net/manuals/tm9-1005-319-10.pdf

Second - Field strip - clean - examine major parts for damage/wear

Third - if you find nothing wrong - Send it to Colt , or a Gunsmith

If you paid that much money for the vaunted Colt, I would be sending it back and asking them to make it right.  And they will from what I've read.

I would send the UPPER (not the whole rifle) back to Colt for repairs.

Before you send it back, what reloads are you shooting?  What are the barrel markings?

Going to call Colt today....

WE have tried every type of ammunition available. But normally shoot PMC or Winchester.

BTW...I have used all of the identical ammunition in my Bushmaster and NEVER had any of the problems he has.

It's a gas problem, don't screw with your chamber.

Swap bolt carriers with a working rifle.  If the problem goes away it's in the carrier, if not it's probably the gas tube, something you can replace with handtools.  Hopefully no one stuck something in the gas tube in an ill advised attempt to clean it.

I've seen a primer stuck in the bolt gas key, or at least part of one.  Commercial ammo, blown primer.  You should be able to get a pipe cleaner completely thru the gas key and the tip come out inside the bolt carrier.

Ive tried the bolt carrier swap with no luck. As for the gas tube, it did it right out of the box.

Speaking of boxes...Its in a box headed to Colt as we speak!

THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS!!!

Are you shooting Wolf ammo?  Sometimes the paint they use to seal the bullet builds up in the chamber, making it stick.
