Are any of the shorter FHs as good as the longer Phantoms? My A1 & 2s have been killing me recently in low light, but I dont like having that long Phantom sticking off the end of my gun

Your short A1 and A2 comps are not good flash hiders.
Vortexes and phantoms ARE good flash hiders.
If you need a good flash hider, you will just have to deal with that extra 3/8" of length.

Randall, can you tell me the weights of the a2, the phantom, and the vortex FH?

Forest has them on his weights table...
MD AR-15 component weights excel file

A2: 2.3 ounces
Phantom 5C2: 2.1 ounces
Phantom or Vortex: 3.2 ounces
That last entry worries me because I know that phantoms are lighter than vortexes just from holding them in my hand...

I'll try to remember to weigh them tonight when I get home, but I am supposed to be racing off for the holiday weekend.
I'll post here again so subscribe to the thread and you will be notified...

I didn't figure there was anything shorter that would work. Oh well, I can deal with 3/8" better then a blinding flash right in front of me.

Thanks Randall!

What Brl length are you using?

I dont find the muzzle flash to be "blinding" on a 16, 18 or 20" AR with an A2 flash supressor.

With a 14.5" i go with the pinned phantom just to get the Brl over 16"

Shooting any of the lengths at night with A1 or A2 and M193 or M855 makes a nice fireball.

the other nite we shot m193 out of a rra w/a2 vs. an armalite w/phantom.  the phantom is clearly the winner

Many years back we did a night shoot for just this reason. From 16 & 20" Brls with A2 flash supressor the muzzle flash was only about the size of a tennis ball.  I did not find it to be distracting or to diminish my night vision at all.

From various muzzle brakes and target crown Brls the muzzle flash was a huge basketball sized fireball.
