Okay, working from the assumption that the ban will expire in September, I want to put the shortest legal upper I can with w flash supressor on my post ban Bushmaster.  I definitely want a flat top upper.  Any guidance from anyone here?  I plan on turning this gun into a CQB type of weapon to include the short barrel and a collapsable stock.  I live in Colorado if that makes any difference as far as barrel length.

Thanks for any advise you can give.

Probably 11.5 w/5.5 pinned suppressor like mine. Unless you want to change class of weapons which would be very nice but expensive !!!

The shortest legal length rifle barrel, without registering the weapon as an NFA SBR, is 16 inches measured from the muzzle to the closed breach face.  You can have a shorter barrel, IF you PERMANENTLY attach a muzzle device so that the overall length of the device and barrel is at least 16 inches.

thanks for the info...so if I'm understanding things right I should be able to purchase a "pre-ban" 16" M4 barrel assembly (seen here http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/barrel-assemblies/pbbl16m4a.asp) and replace the barrel on my current bushmaster which is a flat top and have what I'm lloking for after the ban expires.

If this is correct, how difficult is it to change barrels out of my current upper?  Or would it make more sense as far as reliability/accuracy/headspacing etc. to spend the extra $200.00 and buy the complete upper assembly minus bold carrier and charging handle?  I'm pretty mechanical, but have never had my AR more that field stripped for cleaning so I don't know what the issues are for replacing barrels.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Edit - just read the section in "build your own" about replacing barrels, seems monkey -like simple to do....still curious about headspacing issues or anything like that if anyone know of any I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks,

Matt

P.S. - gotta love all the info this place has!

Edit:

nevermind again, already found my answers by continuing to read the barrel replacement post!
