I am new to AR's and plan to have one soon. I am not a competitor but would not mind trying. I want a 20" for this reason. Mostly, I want a range gun for plinking and whatnot. I have been toying with the idea of building my own from parts kits, but it seems like I can get a much better rifle if I buy a complete upper and a complete lower. Plus I am lazy. :) I have been eyeballing the RRA stuff and can put one together from ADCO for about 600 bucks. I am not interested in a two stage trigger or any NM stuff as I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. Is there a better brand for the money? I wouldn't mind spending a lot less than 600 bucks, but I don't want a jam-o-matic junker. I want something completely reliable, but cheap. So tell me oh great ones, what should I do? |

RRA would be a great AR for you. I consider them one of the best AR's for the price. I've got one that has never had a problem. Steve from Adco is also a great guy to do business with. Start saving your money. You'll soon want a 16", an M4, an SPR. Plus mags, ammo, and accessories. Welcome to our little club! |

Alright, now that we have that out of the way, why should I spend more on the A4 upper? I do not plan to mount any extravagant optics on it and if I do, I figured I could just cram a weaver type base on the handle. Other than having my head way up high over the stock, is there any real drawback to doing this? Also, RRA chambers their 20" guns in .223 Wylde. They tell me this is because it is a good cross between a tight NM and a more loose .223/5.56 NATO chamber. Is this true? If so, is it what I want? Also, why in the world would I want a chrome lined bore? I would hate to try and get any kind of accuracy out of it. It seems to only be good for people who romp around in the jungle and don't take good care of weapons. And lastly, where can I get some good USGI mags? What capacity should I get? Thanks for the help. |

If you go for the upper with a fixed carry handle, you'll eventually want some kind of optic. I would recommend the flat top with the removeable carry handle, then it gives you the option to go either way. Most standard barrels these days are chrome lined. They do just fine for accuracy. I can get 1" groups at 100 yards with irons on a good day. Stick to the USGI mags. 30 round mags are more abundant, 20 round mags are nice for bench shooting. They can be found in plenty on the Equipment Exchange Check out Troy's FAQ on mags for some really good info: FAQ |

If you are planning on using the rifle for accuracy you would be crazy not to get a 2-stage trigger. From my own personal experience I have a single stage myself(unfortunately), I shot a friends 2-stage and noticed an immidiate increase in accuracy and feeling. You know exactly when it will go "Boom" with a two stage. There is not much slack in a single, so any non-expectant shot may throw you off. Get the 2-stage....you can thank me later...oh..and like the last post said..get the flat top upper. It was the best decision I ever made. In fact, I waited 4 months to get mine. The great folks at ARMALITE agreed to swap out my a2 upper with the a3 as long as I paid the shipping. With service like that..I would have to recommend ARMALITE! just my 2 cents |
| They're completely right, get the flat top upper, I bought a Colt HBAR A2 and ended up getting rid of it after 50rds for half the money I paid for it, needed the money for xmas, but was the excuse to start saving for an A3 carbine. Besides you can always put a carry handle on it, ARMS sight, etc. |

The learning process of building your own AR is definitely worth it. That knowledge cannot be earned in any other way. You also can make it exactly what you wish to be. Don’t count on saving much money unless you only buy a stripped receiver and a complete kit from Model1 or J&T. I bought my Mega Gator stripped receiver, then DPMS lower parts kit, several tools, CAR stock, Bushy A3 M4 complete upper, KKF A3 muzzle brake job, Surefire light and mount, fore grip, ARMS #40, Hakko Holosight, sling, GG&G sling things and Orlite and GI mags all separately. More than half of the money I thought I was going to save ended up spent on shipping, handling and other fees. But I did ended up with exactly what I wanted which is not possible even with all the options Model1 or J&T kits give you. And, yes, start saving up, you will be wanting to add all sorts of goodies on the AR you built and then starting on a new build. |

I have decided what I am going to do. I am going to get a RRA standard lower with the A2 buttstock and a 20" A2 upper (also the standard build). This way I save about 200 bucks and can buy one part now and the other part in a few weeks. Here's a pic.
