For my next build of a 6.5G marksman AR, im considering a side charging upper. I dont care for the awkward action of a standard charging handle under a scope. Problem is ive never handled a side charger before. Anyone have any advice or experience with them that couple help me to choose to use one or not, and the brand to purchase. Or maybe there is an article somewhere that could help. Id love to see an experts opinion of each brand after using each of them. Maybe they all are trash. I just dont know.
Thanks in advance.

I like the ASA, left side, non-reciprocating handle.

I have a Gibbz and it works great, but when you charge the gun the charging bar and handle comes back toward the stock. There is a new one out, can't remember who makes it but the it's all contained in the upper when you charge the gun

Edit; What the hell am I talking about, some pics

I'm interested as well. I convinced a friend he should roll his own in stead of purchasing, now I need to help him decide on parts. He's all about accuracy so I'm thinking he would benefit from a side charger as well.

You will still need a Grendel bolt.

This is my 6.5 G its a LAR side charging upper with a young bolt carrier. I have a hard time with the side charging upper because of the muscle memory of standard charging handles.
Honestly i dont see them being anymore better at what they do than a standard charging handle set up. if you look at the price of the side charger versus that of a standard setup. I paid 300 for mine at a local gun shop and i thouroughly regret it. Does it look cool? damn right it does but the knob comes loose occasionally and i try to rack it like a regular rifle at times. if i had it to do all over again i would have used the money i spent on the upper and put that towards a better optic.

I built my first AR with a Crosshill reciprocating right side charge. Reasoning, I've never used ARs but have many shotguns and hunting rifles with the same setup. So for me it was like just more natural.
Now I want to build a pistol with a left side charge non reciprocating handle. I think I like the Matrix design where it doesn't extend behind the receiver in operation but I've never handled one so ymmv.
Roush also has a nice one similar to the Matrix. If they ever decide to publish their phone number I might start doing business with them. But until then I know another Arfcommer had trouble with them with an issue and could not even find a way to phone them. I've vowed I'll never deal with a company selling high $ items that I have no way to call.

Always wanted to grab one of the LAR Grizzly uppers.  Someday I will find one.  I do like the newer stuff tho, it's well contained clean.

ASA is sexy but pricy. Machining is flawless. Charges silky. I bought the upper separate and they charge $45+shipping to cut the notch in your carrier or buy a carrier for $70. You can also download the diagram if you have access to the tools to do it yourself. I had them cut my carrier and they did a nice job. Even re-coat the notch. I don't have a pic of the handle side on my phone but it's a really clean design and locks down nice and low.
