I have a RRA Predator a was wanting a set of open sight for shooting occasionally.  I am wanting to make my own, and was wondering if anyone one here could assist by measuring the height of their sights on a similar setup. The info I need is the height from the flat top to the center of the rear apperature and from the top of the gas block to the front sight post.  I know in the long run it would just be easier to buy a set, but I want the challenge.  Thanks for any help in advance.

Iron sights are going to vary in height across manufacturers.  The simple answer to your question?  As low as you can make them, so long as your cheek weld to view them is comfortable.  In general with optics/irons you want them as close to center bore as possible to retain the best accuracy at varying distances.

Thank you for your reply, I do intend to keep them as low as possible.  What I am primarily trying to determine is the difference in front and rear in relationship to the bore so that I can account for bullet drop.  Obviously you can't have the parallel with the bore, the front is lower to compensate for the drop.  Mainly just  want a starting point to go from to hopefully eliminate a bunch of trial and error.  Guess after establishing the rear sight height, I can lay out the trajectory and determine the front sit height from that. With the gas block being lower than the top rail, I have a lot more room to work with it.  Now to decide whether to make them flip up, or fixed since they will only be on the rifle when I pull off the scope and mount.
