I have a 24" stainless steel bull barrel 1:9 twist varminter in 5.56 NATO.

I handload. What is the best bullet weight for accuracy? I have been shooting some 55 grain FMJBT's with 25 grains IMR 4895 with good results, but I always want to do better.

TIA.

Half the fun of reloading is finding the right load for your rifle.  I just picked up a small assortment of different weight projectiles to work up loads for my 1:8 and 1:9 rifles.  With factory ammo my 1:8 likes 68gr HPBT from Black Hills, but I haven't had a chance to try handloads yet.

I got some 77gr, 75gr, 68gr, and 55gr Sierra match bullets to try out.  With a 1:9 it may not be able to handle the 75 and 77gr loads, but it may still be worth a try as each barrel is a bit different than any other.

68 grain and lighter should all be safe bets to try out and should be stabilized by a 1:9 twist.

I have been shooting 60 grain V-Max from the magazine and 75 A-Max single shot with great accuracy in a 20" 1-9" twist. I am using W748 which has given me excellent accuracy. Your 1-9" with a 24 should shoot very nicely with 60-75 grain pills, the Speer 60 grn soft point are also very accurate bullet and much cheaper than the above two.
