I started my 5.56 build with rifle-length MOE handguards. They looked good but were rather fat in the hand. The rifle started showing exceptional accuracy potential, thanks to the 20", govt profile, Green Mountain Barrel. So I switched to a freefloat model, a 2" diameter YHM customizable HG. This is the one that is smooth all the way around. I didn't like the looks, so later I switched to a Midwest Industries SS model handguard. It too was 2" in diameter, but with a fixed rail on top. I liked it but it was still a little too fat for my tastes, so when Midwest Industries came out with a SS gen 2 model that is thinner, I ordered one right away. It has the same fixed top rail, but is only 1.5" thick side to side, just right for the hand to wrap around. You can still attach extra rails if you want, but mine is wrapped in 2mm perlon cord to keep my skin off the bare metal. Its also lighter than the gen 1 model and has a different kind of barrel nut and way of attaching the tube to the nut. Many other HG makers are coming out with thinner FF handguards, but MI's is the thinnest. In fact, only the smallest lo-pro gas blocks will fit inside it. Not a problem for me as I prefer to keep my gas block out in front of the handguard. - CW

| Been very pleased w/ Troy Alpha. Have a 9" on a carbine and an 11" on a middy. One surprising thing - both have Troy LP gas blocks and the screws for the add on rails will contact the bottom of the gas block when installed at the 6:00 position over top the block. I've taken it off and will grind some off the screw, but surprised that they don't actually work together w/o modification. |
