In the May issue of Small Arms Review there's an article on building a "FrankenSten": a highly modified AR upper with Sten mag loading from the left side and cocking handle on top a la MP5.  It's SWEET!

Javac. A company back in the early 80's by the name of A.R.C used to build sten mag side fed 9mm uppers also, along with 45 grease gun side feed upper. I'm surprised there has'nt been any companies like Mec Tec or others producing a cheap tube upper. CMMG had a picture of an old Bill Holmes 9mm upper floating around. I figure a complete upper could be done very cheap. Hell they used to sell a complete post ban Tec 9 for $150.00. 4130 tube, a bolt made out of round bar stock and captive recoil spring assembly 16" CM barrel and investment cast magwell block. Mass produced probably $130.00 cost. You never know someone could come out with one again.

fizassist. The upper in that picture looks better than the old A.R.C. upper. I'd like to see Kurt do some conversions like that. If a person has enough capital to get it up and running and price is right they'd probably do well. Side loader would'nt need a mag block either. It might be as cheap to make a new bolt as it would be to redo the fixed firing pin Sten bolts. Looks real interesting though. It would also solve the Grease gun mags being to wide for the AR magwell problem.
