I have been considering changing out my birdcage for a Vortex. From what I have seen it looks like it suppresses over 90% of muzzle flash. I am currious about a few points though. 1. does it realy increase accuray by aligning exiting gasses as claimed? If so to what extent...noticable? not even a factor? Has anyone here tested its effects accuracy wise.
My other question is, how durable are they? has anyone ever heard of the tines getting bent from dropping ..etc.? This could be a bad thing. thanx |

Not to bash Smith, but I had a Vortex I shot with in the 1999-2001'ish area, that had the prongs spreading outward from the muzzle blast & heat, so I changed it out to a Phantom. There was some talk that they had a bad batch, or I may have picked up a cheap copy, I suppose. I thought I would avoid that with Phantom because it has the prongs tied together. However, I did some comparison shooting one night with a friend, between the Vortex & a Birdcage, and we couldn't tell the difference. I have two Phantoms now, but the rest of my AR's still have BC's. Funny how similar the A1's are to a Vortex. Buy more ammo or support gear, instead of upgrading... Just my .02. Later! John |
| I can tell you from personal experience that a Vortex from Smith Engineering suppresses so much of the flash that the only flash to be seen comes from the ejection port when the fired shell is ejected. Pretty spectacular in my opinion. I haven't dropped my muzzle on anything hard enough to cause damage to my firearm or the Vortex. |
