| I am looking at getting my 1st AR-15 soon. I am mainly looking for something short and light. I really would like a Pre-ban with a tele-stock but because of $$$, I'll probably go with A Post-ban. Here's my question. I was looking at a Bushmaster Superlight w/ Stubby Stock. http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/weapons/pcwa2y16sl.asp and the bushmaster XM15 E2S M4 Type 16in Carbine and adding a stubby stock to it. http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/weapons/pcwa2x14m4my.asp What is the advantages/disadvantages to the XM15 with the Mini Y Comp muzzle brake? Any other suggestions?? |

Hello fellow AZ'er, I don't have experience with either rifle you are asking about so I probably shouldn't even be replying but here's some info I've read on the site time and time again regarding the stubby stocks and the mini-y comp. People for the most part find the stubby stock to be too short for them. Unless you're a midget (no offense if you are), you may not be happy with the stubby. Look at going with an A1 buttstock instead. It's 3/8" shorter than an A2 stock. Regarding the mini-y, it is supposedly one of the loudest muzzle brakes on the planet! When I was first starting out, I decided that I wanted a barrel with no muzzle attachement because I didn't want the noise or the concussion that's associated with a brake and was told time and time again that the recoil on an AR is minimal. I went with a Rock River Arms 16" M4 barrel with pressed on fake flash suppressor. So I ended up with a true 16" barrel and all of it's benefits, the look of a flash suppressor without the added noise. I'm happy with that decision but you'll have to decide for yourself. Another popular option is to purchase the rifle and then send it off to Kurt of Kurt's Kustom Firearms and have him remove the mini-y and attach one of his brakes. I've read nothing but good things about the brakes that he offers. Finally, I should also mention that I've only had my rifle for about 5 months and ended up purchasing a preban so if you even think you might want to do that, you might as well save up for a couple more months and get a preban because otherwise you might be dissatisfied. BTW, I have a preban upper on the way for my preban lower that will include the superlight Bushmaster barrel. That think looks kickass and I'm into saving some weight! Hope that helps little. If nothing else, at least you get a free bump to the top (BTT)! Good Luck! Drivie |

I'm planning on getting a Bushmaster Superlight w/ Stubby Stock in the next couple of months, unless I change my mind before then... I also am looking for something short and light. The stubby stock looks a hell of a lot stronger than the tele-stock. I figure that it will be easier for my wife and kid to handle if I can put it down... [:)] I have a HBAR Bushmaster Shorty. It is an awesome little rifle, but it is front heavy due to the heavy ass barrel. Whats funny is the HBAR is thicker than many hunting rifles in much larger calibers. So, with an HBAR you are lugging a lot of unnecessary weight... I wouldn't bother with a muzzle brake. Most are merely hood ornaments or noise/headache makers. Maybe in '04 we'll be able to put real flash hiders on once again. Better let our representatives know what we think... |
