A lot of posters recommend having a spare bolt in one's kit. Sounds reasonable to me. What I'm not clear on is whether or not you should prep it before hand in some fashion.  Otherwise, how do you know that it will maintain correct headspace when and if you ever need to use it?

Am I making sense here or am I overthinking this?

thanks in advance,

Makes perfect sense. First I purchase a quality spare bolt. Then I make sure the head pace is correct and mark the bolt to identify what rifle it goes with. I then shoot two mags with the spare bolt to ensure proper function before relegating it to spare duty.

I have a spare BCG sitting in the safe.  It's a LMT, and I test hopped it in both (Colt) uppers.
Good to go, I think.
