Avid gun collector, hunter, etc. Have never built an AR before but I have a special one I want to build. It is all centered around an LMT SOPMOD stock that was fielded in Afghanistan by a 3rd group SF 18D. I have a LAR lower, PSA parts kit, BCM bcg. What upper is worthy of hosting this LMT stock? I was thinking a RECCE or 16 inch midlength. I have looked at a lot of uppers, but just curious what do you all think would be appropriate? I would like to coyote hunt with it but also used as shtf gun. I would maybe like to get it as close as what the operator used but maybe they can configure their own? If that is not possible then maybe i could see some different suggestions.
The defenders of freedom are my heros and I want to do this build proud. What would you do? |

It was most likely used, based on your story, on a pretty "standard" SOPMOD M4A1 Carbine, possibly with a 10.3" CQBR upper, possibly not. This would be a non-FF CL carbon steel barrel of 14.5" with a KAC M4 RAS or RIS handguard. Whether that would suit your needs or not, is a hard thing to say. For a hunting rig that would keep the "spirit" of an M4A1, I might consider a 14.5" or 14.7" M4A1 "HB" barrel with a pinned muzzle device and a FF railed handguard - something like an LT 7.0 or KAC M4 FF RAS if you can find one. A drop in FF like the DD Omega would work as well. At a glance, it would continue to look like an M4A1, with only minor variation (namely the FF rail). Top it with the optic(s) of your choice, and enjoy. There's a whole, very long thread on SOPMOD M4A1s in the AR General discussion forum. ~Augee |

I got to your pics in the thread Augee. Very nice. I take it operators get to keep their tools when their service is done? I always wondered about that.
I think that is the route I am going to go. M4A1 and keep it as close as possible to the real deal. I live close to BCM and I see they have a 14.5 DD RIS II in stock. I am sure I can get it to kill a coyote. Thank you sir. |

Not in the least bit.
I'm certainly no "operator," and neither I, nor "they," get to keep issued weapons. My personally owned weapons are all personally purchased and funded. Would be pretty awesome, though...
