Just got my Spikes M4.  What a beautiful gun....  Although, I wanted to keep it flawless forever, I had to go out and shoot a little.  Very crisp cycling.  Reminds me of my stainless Mini 14.  I understand that this rifle is a 16" "middy" but with a carbine gas system.  What will I need to do to go to 14.5" Barrel?  Well, for starters, a 14.5" barrel.  Does Noveske make a stainless one?  My first rifle was too big, Bushy 20" HBar, and heavy and I thought 16" was a big enough jump.  I thought wrong.

A couple things:

The M4 has a carbine gas system, not a midlength.  It is in no way a "middy"
You currently have a 16" barrel with a A2 flash hider
ADCO can cut your barrel down to 14.5" and attach an extended flash hider to it to make it the required 16".  I'd recommend a Vortex flash hider or a YHM phantom.  Visit ADCOFirearms.com for costs of barrel work.

Does your upper look like:

#1 16" M4

#2 16" Midlength

You want to keep it flawless forever???  It is a rifle not a collectors Singer 1911.

For the barrel you can send it to ADCO and have them cut it down and pin on a flash suppressor.  16 to 14.5 you are not going to see much difference in weight at all.  SBR is the way to go or go to plastic foregrips.

You beat me!!!

I think he might have a carbine gas system but with longer rails that extend over the gas block.

I understand it's no collectors item.....it's just like getting a new pair of shoes.   Once you get them dirty, you can do whatever, wear them whenever, wherever and so on........

Looks like it's off to ADCO............by the way, it's not the weight, it's the size I'm trying to cut down.

Thanks for the information guys.

Spikes will cut the barrel down for you also last I checked. ADCO does very good work also though so it's really up to you. If I were you I would call and compare prices.

Yeah I totally know what you mean you like to keep it all pretty and no nicks.  Now I understand what you are getting out I thought you wanted to build a safe queen.  I also now understand why you want to cut it down because I was confused thinking 14.5 vs 16 will not make much weight difference.

Post pics when you get it done!

ADCO charges a total of $130 to do it ($35 for disassembly of the upper, $65 to cut and thread the barrel and $30 to permanently attach the FH). They do a great job. Here's a Colt 6520 they cut from 16" to 14.7" and permanently attached the A2 FH
