Been seeing a few of these uppers lately for sale I've read spikes discontinued these So I'm wondering, are spare parts available ? should the need arise or are the BCG components interchangeable with other manufacturers ? |

There were some very nicely assembled Spike's ST-22's. Look for LW SS barrels, Daniel Defense
forearm rails, and Spike's muzzle brake or flash hider. The actual Spike's BCG can be swapped out for a CMMG unit; however, you need to retain the Spike's barrel collar. There will probably be some play in the Spike's collar and the CMMG rails, but if your lower has a buffer and buffer spring, leave them in. They will take up the slack or play and that goes a long way to eliminating malfunctions. I contacted Spike's for replacement parts for my ST-22 after the cut off, and the first questions asked were "..are you the original owner? and "...has the unit been altered in any way?" I made several mods to my BCG to work with the CMMG BHOA, and that was enough for me to decide to go CMMG all the way. But hey, you are the one who needs answers, why don't you call them and ask if they'll warranty a used upper. Let us know what hey say. For my money, I'd avoid getting someone else's problems and buy a new CMMG. Ted |

I have several Spike's Uppers. Never had any problems with any of them.
Considering a Spike's Upper, you can find a few spare parts at Black Dog Machine. With them being out of Production, Guess Spike's had some real problems with later uppers. Ted's right about going CMMG. Avoid problems and buy a CMMG with a lifetime warranty.... It's the hottest thing on the market right now and the price is absolutely the best value.. Dave S |

Considering most used Spikes units I've seen cost more used than a CMMG does new, and considering the amount of problems that Spikes had with them, I wouldn't buy one.
Get the CMMG with stainless bolt. Much more reliable, and you can get spare parts if needed. Dave N |

For what it's worth, my ST-22 has been utterly reliable. I had a couple FTF in the first couple hundred rounds breaking it in, but it has been flawless over the past several thousand. Spare parts are available - I ordered a few back up parts (springs, extractor, firing pin) a couple months ago. It is running 100% on what it came with from Spike's though.
CMMG does seem to be the go-to .22 company right now, just like Spike's was a few years ago. That said, I had bought 2 barrels from CMMG that were absolute crap, so I would hesitate to buy anything from them. YMMV. |

I've bought two of their dedicated .22 barrels in the last two months with no issues. (from Brownells) I use a Spikes bolt with one, CMMG with the other. What problems did you have? Something we should look out for? |

Something we should look out for? My problems were with their 5.56 barrels. Both of them had horrible finishes on them. I had to send one back 3 times because the parkerized finish kept flaking off. They made good on it each time, but the barrel never could hold a decent group - even with match ammo. They finally sent me a completely new barrel that was decent, but I ended up letting it go for a 6.8 SPC barrel. The second barrel was a 14.5" midlength LW profile. It's accuracy was less than good. It also had issues cycling anything but mil-spec loads. I ordered it with an F marked FSB that was retained by two of the softest pins I have ever seen. When I tried to drive them out to mount the barrel with a FF rail, the pins squished, easily. I had to drill the pins out then replace them with some properly hardened pins. It was apparent to me that they really cut corners with their barrels. Maybe they fixed it; I don't know. Next to a higher quality barrel like DD or BCM, the CMMG offerings don't hold a candle. Again, YMMV. I have heard a lot of good about their .22's though. |

I have to say I'm glad I wasn't dealing with these issues from the past with CMMG. I can't speak for that. I can say I have 5.56 barrels from them that accuracy, finish is above average. I cycle everything including Wolf through mine. I did have to drop a size in buffer for the Wolf.
I just removes an F fron sight base and the pins certainly were not soft. They were very tight though. I was able to reuse the pins. So obviously they have made changes, at least since I have dealt with them over the last couple of years. 1811 guy. I do understand how you feel when you've been burnt. Dave N |

I initially tried CMMG because they were about $100 less than others - you get what you pay for. Fit, finish and function were all below what the other barrels I have. Maybe my standards are too high? I was all too happy to get rid of the CMMG barrels in exchange for something better. I will say that the barrel that was replaced by the CMMG barrel was from RRA and the CMMG was better. I finally settled on a DD barrel and couldn't be more pleased. |

CMMG is very close to releasing their auto trip set up. Dave N I hope you're right. Their comments in Circuit's thread about building a trip made it sound like they'd given up, at least for now. We're fast approaching a year from their initial announcement and I don't see anything for sale. |

I know. Progress seems to be painfully slow but I will say when CMMG releases something, it has been tested to death.
Hence the Evolution .22. Most reliable semi auto .22 I've ever owned. I shot the full auto version at Knob Creek and it ran great. It's a hoot to shoot. Dave N |
