My ST-22 upper has a dedicated .22 bolt, and the buffer system is contained in that bolt, or so I'm told. My Spikes lower has a Spikes ST-2 buffer and recoil spring. Should I remove the ST-2 buffer/spring, or is it ok to fire the gun with the ST-2 buffer installed? Thanks

no, leave the lower as is and shoot it.

There is no buffer per se for that setup, however, the bolt mass and the recoil spring moderate the effects of recoil.
Some .22LR Ciener type systems have some play in the rails and rob the firing pin of inertia. By leaving your buffer
and action spring in place you ensure a better, more consistent lockup resulting in fewer FTF.

You may have missed it, but you can find an alternative to the buffer here: www.taccom3g.com/

A few of the guys who do product testing have them in hand for long term evaluation, as it is a very
inexpensive part you may want to try one yourself and lend your experience to our members.

FWIW, I always leave in my buffer/spring when using a 22LR upper.  No issues yet and it's been pretty damn reliable for me.

Thanks for the great info! I'll report back with a range report.

I take it out of my ST-22 setup to reduce weight. The only real reason to leave it in is to be able to quickly switch to a caliber upper that requires a buffer i.e. 5.56x45

If you leave the buffer and spring in place you'll get less wear on your lower receiver.

Some like this part to keep everything snugly in place:
