So I was shooting my AR (DDM4 Carbine) yesterday at about 100 yds and I was getting decent groups considering I didnt have a good rest to shoot off of, I had 3 consecutive groups of under 2 inches when all of a sudden on my fourth group I shot well outside 6 inches...none of my shooting conditions changed (wind, rest, ammo, etc.). Has anyone had this happen before? I shot some more after that group and I was back to shooting under 2 inches. I know it could have been my fault, but it just seemed really random. Thanks for any input.

What shot count were you using for your groups?

If your barrel heated up, the groups could begin to open up.  I've had that happen on occasion.

About how many rounds can I shoot before the barrel will get too hot and affect accuracy?

The discipline of 'calling the shot' helps teach you to better control the let-off.

While 5 is better than 3 switch to 10 shot groups.  What you are seeing is normal.

For a better explanation you should read the tacked thread: What's wrong with 3 shot groups
