Back in the day I bought a shitload of 7.62x51 Port on 200rd belts from them. I didn't buy it all at once, but I bought a lot of it....71-200rd cans total to be exact over the span of about 6-8 weeks. They were fine except for one thing, the packing department sucked. On numerous occasions the ammo arrived with the boxes severely damaged with the ammo cans hanging out of them and there were plenty of times I was amazed they they were able to determine who they were being shipped to at all except for the fact they always had more one box to fill my order.
The shipping department used oversized cartons that were not rated for heavy contents, sometimes they would use wadded up paper for packing material to take up the slack for oversized boxes but usually they would use nothing. So they would toss a couple of loaded .30 cal ammo cans into a light duty corrugated box, slap a shipping label on it and send it. I'd usually order at the very least 1200rds, which would be 6 cartons minimum. I called a few times to complain how bad the shipping dept was doing as far as packaging was concerned, they really did ship the orders fast in those days (3-4 years ago)..then it finally it happened. They had run out of the PORT but they got in a bunch of really nice 7.62x51 FN ammo. It was either loose packed or in the 5rd PVC clear plastic packs. The UPS driver brings a load, and hands me one box which was in pieces with no ammo cans..just tore up corrigated paper. Luckily he made some type of notes. I called and ended up talking with a customer service woman at SG....a real bitch with the attitude that SG does no wrong......I think I had to go thru my credit card people to finally resolve it. (keep in mind this was a few years ago) That was the last order I ever placed with them, but for a while it really was too good to be true. I was paying just under .18 cents per round DELIVERED taking advantage of their membership and coupons. Back in those days, SG had some of the best deals going as far as ammo went, but the customer service and packing departments left much to be desired. In retrospect...it was worth putting up with that for the prices they were charging...those were the days! L |
| I agree about that 1970's Belgian 7.62x51. The best I have ever shot and not too bad at .17 per round shipped. They also goof up at times. They sent out a bunch of sealed cases of 1950's Yugo 8mm instead of the advertised 1970's. But at $49/1200 round case shipped it doesn't look too bad now. At least they will always send out a shipping label to take it back when they make a mistake. |
| They did the same thing Cheaper-Than-Dirt did to get on everyone's shit-list. They advertised ammo at one price and then upped-it when I called to make a purchase. They said all prices were subject to change. When I said it sounded like a bait-and-switch the guy on the phone basically said, "If you don't like it, don't buy it." That's fair, I guess, but I didn't like it. |

Many members here have done the "buyer's club" shit only to have it canceled on them when they put in a large order(of maybe 4-5 cases) and Sportsman's Guide flagged it as a commercial account. Yep, 4k rounds to them was deemed to be "for resale" or some garbage and they tried to argue with multiple members regarding whether it was for personal use or not.
They have some pretty terrible practices that they suddenly pull out of their ass at the drop of a hat. They seem to do it when they recognize that they are gonna lose their ass on shipping in a big order of heavy ammo. |
| Back awhile they would do all sorts of crazy shit....advertise russian ammo and you'd get albanian. Give a good price on ammo and then run out of it fast....BO the ammo and they would try everything to get you to cancel the BO so they wouldn't honor the lower price. The packing was horrendous. The only time you might catch a deal is signing up for or the renewal of the buyers club you would get free shipping on an order. I used to hold off until the renewal and order on a few cases of ammo. Now SG is owned by some French company and the ammo is the same everyone else has. Haven't renewed this year but I still get the emails and mailings. |

Bottom line:
There are much better companies to do business with. There are a couple outfits who will bend over backwards to make things right, sell a good product for a good price and their customer service is second to none. They support this site, and if they make a mistake, they will do the right thing and make it right. The two ammo suppliers that immediately come to mind are AIM and Wideners. You'll notice that right now, both are almost completely sold out of the better grades of ammo. There's a reason for that, but these are very trying times. I'm sure in due time both these suppliers will have more in stock and better choices. IMO, you will find no better outfits to do business with, period. |
| I got put on one of their backorder lists for 7.62x39 a few years ago. There wasn't a problem until I got a notice in the mail a week later saying that they weren't going to honor the price that I ordered the ammo at. As others have said order from AIM or Wideners. |

I used to buy ammo from them all the time, got a lifetime supply of some, along with great deals on AK mags that I did resell at a good profit. Get the discount coupons available online. I've got everything I need and prices have increased from the good ole days. I made enough money reselling those AK mags to buy several new AKs. I still have cases of Wolf .223, 7,62x39 and 5.45x39 that I got from them for under $100.00 per thousand rounds that I had to play the back order game on for over a year but they came through in the end without canceling my orders. If you sign up for the buyers club, use a $10.00 off coupon and make the order of ammo a big heavy one as you should get free shipping on that first order. Get you money's worth with a big heavy free shipping order. |

i have ordered a bunch of ammo from them over the past two years as part of the buyers club. knock on wood never had any of the problems you guys talk of. it is true about backorders but as long as you keep them current they honor the price. they will send you a email and postcard about backorders being pushed back and you must respond. i actually perfer the backoder cause i can order at todays price and pay for it later.
going to ups tomarrow to pick up my 6 cases of 250 round wolf 00buck shot at 109 per case shipped. the down side being i orderd these back in feb. of this year. sometime in april i noticed that the price i paid and the buyers club price i was suppose to get was off by about 8$ a case so i called up expecting the worse and to my suprise the customer service rep not only adjusted the price but let me add 4 cases to the order and still gave me the free shipping. good luck |

About SG
Found a useful post at Arfcom months ago, just before prices went through the roof –– LC M855 below $300/k. Dialed up SG on the Internet, placed an order for 1k, got an e-mail confirmation and an order form. Printed out both. Bought the membership, which got me free shipping. So far, great. Checked my VISA a day later and found they'd charged me about $40 more –– which I've heard on the forum happened to others. Called customer service, explained the situation and the documentation, and the guy grudgingly agreed to refund the difference. I don't trust them. You may have a better experience. |
| SG's honesty and marketing practices leave much to be desired. Their customer dis-service folks are legendary idiots and known liars. I avoid them at all costs. Buy from more reputable folks AIM, Natchez or Wideners, or wait for Cabela's to have their semi-annual sales like they did this past week. |

I ordered a bunch of 9mm which came quickly, but was all .357 Sig. There was a sticker on each box that matched the inventory code of my order. They took it back, no questions asked and sent me what I ordered. Probably due to a receiving clerk getting a little crazy with the sticker gun, so I can't hold it against him.
Just be ready for a deluge of junk mail. |

The thing I really like about SG is their 4-pay-plan. They split your total order up into four equal payments and bill your card every month. That makes it MUCH easier to swallow big ammo orders (and you pay less shipping on one huge order than on multiple small ones).
I order Wolf .223 from them all the time, 4k rounds at a time. Usually about $20 shipping on 4k rounds... Not too shabby. And the price of the actual ammo is as good as you can get anywhere else. My UPS guy hates me now, though. |

I have been a Buyers Club member on and off since 1999 and have seen this company change from good to bad to mediocre to... About two months ago, I renewed my Buyer's Club membership and actually shopped them. I could not believe the difference. The items shipped within a day or two, the coupons worked, the ammo prices were honored, and something different: follow-up emails from customer service asking how the transaction went. I responded just for the hell of it and within a few minutes received a genuine reply from as CS rep thanking me for the good words! I now get notifications of on upcoming 4-pay payments about to post and rapid CS responses to my queries. Incredible! Things have changed tremendously at SPG and for the better, at least in my recent experiences.
Now if I can only find a $15. off coupon –– they all seem to have expired on 27NOV2008 . . . |
