| Looking to buy my first spotting scope. Tried the search function but no results. What is a good power to use? What brand? I was looking at Burris 20-60x-80mm, any good? At 100-300yds I want to be able to seee my hits(.223) with no problem. Any place I could find out like what is the difference you will se with 10x compared to 20x. How important is the middle#(60x) and last #(80mm) when buying a scope? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks |

I REALLY hate to admit this, but I bought a cheap-o NC Star 20-60X60 spotting scope for about $60 Bucks at a gun show, and it works pretty good. Glass is amazingly clear. The longest I've used it is 200 yds, but it does work. I think it would reach out further than 200 yds., but that's as far as I've used it, so I can't advise. Came with a zippy-case, olive-drab rubberized "coating", lens caps, tripod and even a laser(???). Seeing as how it just sits on a bench, I wasn't worried about it being "weapon-grade".
I figured for $60 Bucks it was worth a try, and I really can't bitch. Just more money for ACOGS! |

Lawman, can you see your hits clearly at 200yds with the 20x scope you have? I can't speak for him, but I can tell you two weeks ago I was shooting at 200 yards on a perfectly clear Texas day at my local range using one of their borrowed 20 power 40mm objective spotting scopes. Admittedly, they didn't appear to be the most expensive of scopes, but at 200 yards, with perfect vision, I could BARELY see where I was hitting paper with my .223. fwiw |
| Get the Burris it will be clear and with an 80mm Objective it should allow plenty of light, you will find that it will work best at about 20 to 30X for target work. I won't tell you that you will see hits at 600 yards but you should be go to about 300. There is just to much Mirage past 300 for any scope to pick up tiny 223 holes. I have a Brunton 20 X 60 with a 90mm Objective and it will spot 223 holes out to 300 + |
| I have used a scope extensively, astronomy and birdwatching, and a major factor is how stable a mounting system you have. A cheap scope on a rock solid tripod is better than a 2k scope on a shaky tripod. Especially as distance and magnification increases. What is you budget? |
| I have a Konus 20-60x80mm (#7120). It is a decent spotting scope for the money. I haven't shot past 200 yards with it so I can't comment using the spotting scope past that range, but for 200 and under it works great. If I had to buy a spotting scope all over again, I'd definitely check out the Redfield Rampage. It's in the same price range as the Konus, objective is slightly smaller though (only 60mm). The tripod looks a little sturdier than the crappy one I got with the Konus. Definitely curious about these Redfields... |
| I've used a 20-60x80 @ 200 yds, and I can tell you that the atmosheric conditions play a major role in what is clearly visible. That and light along with mirage when the power is cranked up. Sometimes hits can be seen and others not. A .224" hole is pretty small. At 100 yds I just use my 20x scope. |

Lawman, can you see your hits clearly at 200yds with the 20x scope you have? Actually, I could. I'm sure a higher priced/higher quality scope would be clearer, but it was definitely functional at 200yds. Also, it's way better than the loaners at the range. Like I said, it's a cheap scope, but I rarely shoot past 100 yds (max at the local range). The few times I've used it at the Port Malabar Gun Club range, I shot at 200yds and could see the hits. Can't bitch for $60 bucks. |
